Made some progress today. Had to go backward to move forwards. Pulled the head off and tapped the hole and put in an helicoil then stole a bolt from the outside of the cradle and used it on the cams. Repurposed a steel bolt and made it work.

Took me a while to set the timing too. Wanted to make sure it was right and not off a tooth or anything. Iím happy with. Iíve put most of the motor back together now. Tomorrow Iíll get the clutch and transmission in and have it bolted up. Might even be able to fire it up and drive it home. Should be a good day if I work hard and quick.

If you torque them right youíll have no issues. Why get stronger bolts? Youíll just strip the head instead which isnít any better.

I have all the parts for the Quattro swap except for like one tube thatís for the gas tank refill spout. If this would have taken less time then I would do it now but itíll have to wait. Plus, I donít know if Iíll have to swap my clutch because of the different transmission housing. This is a brand new clutch that Iíll be putting in tomorrow and donít want to mess sourcing a new one all over again.

99% sure the bellhousing is identical on the 01X and 02X. They're basically the same transmission but the 02X has a center diff. In fact, the 02X actually has '01X' cast into it in a couple places.

Thatís not the stock turbo on there. I donít know how helpful that will be to you. I have some old pics you can looks at and see if that helps.

If youíre worried about which one is coolant and which one is oil on the block then you should know that they are two different sizes and will only fit accordingly. The top hole is coolant. The lower one is oil.

What Did You Do To Your B7 Today?..

Hereís my cams after head reinstall.
I did the copper link on exhaust cam adjuster and 9-10th link on intake sprocket with the dot on it thanks to iceman, Iím a little concerned about the the intake cam as I turned the crank bolt when the head was off and it seemed like the intake cam was lagging behind.
The chain wasnít super snug at the bottom of tensioner but it also was never super tight when I first did the chain tensioner before realizing I also had a head gasket issue also.

Cranked and started and threw no codes that time, I thought at least a CPS but nope.

    oh well. Weíll see.

It's not uncommon for the cams to seem slightly off when turning over by hand. Reason is that there is no oil pressure in the tensioner so a little slack is normal

Rotate it back to TDC, make sure the marks still line up, then reset the tension on the tensioner. Thatís why you rotate it a few times, to get the tension equalized and then verify the tension on the tensioner. So donít worry, youíre still doing it right.

Got the engine in today but little things really held me up. Finding little connectors and the transmission took a little to get in too. And then connecting the line later and blah, blah, blah. If anyone ever decides to do something like this get a friend to help. It makes it much more enjoyable.

    Clutchmasters flywheel

    Clutchmasters clutch and pressure plate

    Engine and trans together

    Getting ready to go in

Took a while but got it in the engine mounts points

Hopefully the last of it is tomorrow and I actually roll out. I know I hoped that would have been today but no joy.

Anyone heard/used one of these? Expensive but very intriguing. I like the fact that itís directly actuated by a solenoid just like the stock valve rather than vacuum actuated like most Forge valves or just an augmentation to the stock valve like the GFB DV+.

But $210 for a DV is a very tough pill to swallow.

Nice work i3oricua, I can appeciate the time going into that project.

I picked up the Schwaben cooling fin tool awhile back as a why-not purchase from ECS and was ultimately pretty disappointed (as much as you can be for $7) with it's use. I made a short demo of it in action: https://youtu.be/IHjSvddESdc

Send that video to ECS. I bet it would do some good and there could be a revision made based from your review. The feed back might be enough for them to ask for a redesign.

Brought this home for the wagon:

It needs some cracks fixed, going to delete the side markers and headlight washer caps, then get it painted. Still deciding what to do for a grille.

Nice CW, was the boot from BFI as well? that stitching is going to match my interior perfectly...

Just swapped out tails from this:

    To these:

They are Japanese spec, so they have amber in the bottom, which doesnt bother me for the time being. I also swapped a busted connector and cleaned the burnt grounding contact.

Why would Euro taillights bother you? They're better in every way.

How are they better in every way? From the before? Then yes I totally agree. But is there any other difference from US and Euro spec other than the amber color? Same amount of bulbs. Only thing that kind of bothers me, is that the blinker still blinks the top(red) and bottom(amber). Thats the only thing that might bother me. I might modify one of the bulb circuit trays to only flash the bottom.

It's just the Amber turn signals, but that makes a huge difference in my opinion. We bought a set a few years ago and never looked back.

To fix the dual blinking issues all you need to do is recode your lights to ROW. Then only the Amber portion blinks, just as intended

Nice, thanks for the tip on the vag coming. I noticed that the light circuit boards actually have different connectors. I compared the two and it looked the metal pathways were the same, and thought it was something I couldnt see. Good to know its as easy as recoding it.

What Did You Do To Your B7 Today?..

I was required to get euro ones when I moved here and really donít like the amber. Just my taste I guess.

In other news, I got the car back together today. Started her up and got misfire codes and the clutch pedal is stuck to the floor. I obviously have to bleed the slave because it leaked the fluid when I pulled the trans. Iíll get that done tomorrow and I hope that is the real problem with that. Cleared the misfire, turns out I didnít connect the #2 injector. Still have to put the intake manifold back in but feeling better now. Thermostat is leaking and has been a steady problem. Luckily I have a spare one here that Iíll throw in tomorrow as well that should get her running. Fingers crossed. I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel. This was a difficult one man job, at least for someone with no experience.

I took your advice; off into the abyss it goes but one can hope for change. Nice bumper Gosser - did you find that local? I don't see many "good" parts for sale often in Canada. I tend to get lucky just messaging people on Kijiji and following the parts trail...

i agree the product looks poorly molded, but its literally impossible to make something straighten bent things. no two will be alike and you cant expect a static piece to fit into anything other than the exact shape its made for. i do wonder what benefit that "tool" would ever have over a small screwdriver or something where you can easily pick and bend back fins tho

What Did You Do To Your B7 Today?..

Awww man, got everything back together and realized the exhaust isnít sat properly after starting it up.

On install I saw a pretty decent gap towards bottom of the exhaust and head, it wasnít aligned completely to the head, it was literally impossible to get it flush for some reason.

But anyways, I built a diesel Audi i guess lol

Luckily I donít have any engine codes not even a CPS for camís not being aligned correctly or something.
But at the end of the day, first ever head rebuild Iíve ever wrenched. It was just oil changes and cosmetics before this!
