Not today, but a couple of weeks ago, found out when I was doing the 5K tire rotation, one of the front outer axle boots was split and pissing grease everywhere, so.....

Make sure you use a BFH and hit that outer spyder a good whack when you are trying to get it back on the clip. I didn't the first time and went about 5 feet before it popped out and disengaged the splines and ruined my new boot. Had to use the spare boot I bought at the same time.

Did a little junk yard fishing. Saw they had a couple of Touaregs and a Q7 come in recently. All the brake calipers were gone on the Q7 and the fronts on both of the Touaregs, so I snagged a set of 4 pots from the rear of one of the Touraegs and fuel controller from the Q7. I already have a set of 18Z that I am piecing together all the things required, so not that upset all the fronts were gone. The rears were $35 for the pair. Hard to beat that.

The fuel controller is part number ending in C. People have had success with the part number ending in B, so I will slap that C in one of these days and see if it works the same as the B. $20 for science.

    Replaced Cabin (Pollen) Filter
Replaced Engine Air Filter. Also cleaned out a good amount of clogs from the secret hidden 'snow screen filter' before the main air box.
Last replacement was 2015 at 50K. Currently at 82K. Car drove really NICE with some improved tight throttle response!

It should be the same, looks the same, prob just a different revision. The stock a4 controllers are plastic, with a little, tiny heat sink. Nice find

And this past weekend, I finished up another step in bringing the Avant project car back from being a half step away from the junkyard. Bought it with a bucket full of codes, a holed cam follower and chain rattle at start up. Two weeks ago I started the timing chain adventure...

Was not sure exactly what to expect, but found this:

About half the lower guide was missing and the top guide was split in half and the tensioner shaft riding right on the chain. Half of the top guide was wedged between the tensioner and the cam phaser. I took all the precaution I could and fashioned a custom piece of wood to go between the breaker bar and the fire wall to keep that poly drive fully seated and not get out of alignment. Well yeah, that did not work. The thing moved with a loud snap and I am thinking to myself, oh, it came loose. No such luck, it snapped all the poly splines off the bolt, the Assenmacher tool was unphased, but had a piece of the bolt in every groove.

When I pushed around on the tensioner, I could see the cam phaser moving a little bit. My understanding of the cam phaser is that it should not move/rotate unless the N whatever number gives it oil pressure. Well there was no oil pressure going on, so why was the cam phaser moving? So, to be sure, I cut off the chain with a sawzall and sure enough, the cam phaser moved 15-20 degrees back and forth with ease. Time to order a new cam phaser.

Long story short, I took a different route and rather than take off the cam girdle, I cut the cam phaser off just on the phaser side of the chain teeth. This cuts the bolt right at the bottom of the chamfer and is about a .150 inch (about 4mm for ROW) clear of the cam. I took the bolt stud out of the cam with 2 fingers. Taking the old cam phaser apart, sure enough, the counter bore that the spring loaded button sits in was totally deformed, it was basically a ramp allowing the cam phase to be whatever it wanted whenever it wanted. No timing codes though, go figure.

The car is back together, no more chain rattle for 3-4 seconds at startup and no more clack-dack at idle. Soooo quiet, it is hard to believe.

Nice work. Also, nice looking car - especially like the wheels. From the photo the front looks it's sitting a bit higher than the rear.

What Did You Do To Your B7 Today?..

Every b7 s-line is like that. Avants are particularly reverse raked.

Today I picked up a goodie:

Longitudinal APR k04. It’s in excellent shape, I’m pretty excited to get this on soon.

Wheels were from a 2014 S4, $150 for the set, hard to pass that up for OEM wheels. The wide fives it came with were curbed badly, they are in the back yard waiting on a re-furb for spare/winter set.

The front has the usual S-Line gap that is bigger than the rear. The car is kind of backed into the curb, so it looks worse in this picture than it really is. Maybe B5 caps someday to even it out.

Still a few things on the list but nothing is urgent, LCA and I will move the S4 brakes from the sedan to the Avant when I put the Brembos on the sedan. I am going to do some logging and if everything is checking out, I might even tune it.

That's an awfully small turbo for your fully built engine. Sell it and get a GTX like you should have in the first place.

Ain't nobody got time for those fueling problems. At worst this is a stopgap. At best I'll be cool with 300hp and just roll this forever.

I'd be down to do a GTX, but I'm not down with the $2k I'd spend in fueling upgrades to get there (not to mention the $3000 turbo kit cost). This was $600 and only needs S3 injectors and HPFP internals (assuming my low end pump isn't going to die with the increased load).

Fueling is the same with a bigger turbo really. You can stick with S3s or go with RS4s. Really nothing else is different than that.

Yea but fuel pumps and stuff.

Really I’m nowhere near wanting to dive into the big turbo deep end right now. I don’t have the free time or space to really troubleshoot any issues that would crop up with a more custom BT build. And it’s added cost I don’t really want to absorb now even if it not as much as I was implying. As I said, I wasn’t even planning on a k04 right now but this deal was too good to pass up.

Longitudinal APR k04. It’s in excellent shape, I’m pretty excited to get this on soon.
Nice sell it to me, lol.

Do you feel like the 2 pc rotor make a noticeable difference compared to single piece rotors? Like in braking, feel, weight.

I have RS4 injectors and an HPFP for you.

Sure, here you go. Developed by a dude named Stuart in the UK. Works perfectly and he's very responsive to email if you have questions. https://rnse.pcbbc.co.uk/

Kinda jealous on that R8 module though. Wish they weren't so damn expensive. First time my wife saw the camera in action she asks, "no lines?", ha ha. Yeah, then I told her how much those R8 modules usually cost, and that's what she'd need to get for lines.

By all means hit me up with any questions though

Awesome! I appreciate it. Yea I scored mine on an ebay lowball best offer for $150. I think he was asking like $350 for it though. Theyre out there, just few and far between. My next hurdle is the harness, I am going to need to figure that all out.

Yeah, I'll keep and eye out, and if one pops up cheap it can be a future upgrade. In the meantime, this works well. I went Kufatec for the harness, but I don't know if they have one for the R8 module or if you'd need to go custom. I believe you'll also need to add a CAN gateway module to get that to work, right?

Might be interested in the pump. Injectors I’m likely going with S3 instead of RS4 though.

So I think I need to get final clarification from Kaufatec on this but from hours of research I done on this seemingly endless topic of RNS is this... pulled from Audi-Sport

Rob, I’ve looked at the Bentley bible for B6/B7 &, to expand on NHN’s reply, there are 3 buses connected to the CAN gateway (the electronics are hosted in the instrument cluster) - Infotainment bus, Drivetrain bus & Convenience bus. There is also the K wire for diagnosis connected to the cluster & there is also a secondary K wire (called the L wire), which is not connected to the cluster. Both the K & L wires are output to the diagnostic connector. The Drivetrain bus is for the following modules: engine control (J220), transmission control (J217), ABS (J104), airbag (J234), steering column (J527), steering angle sensor (G85) & multifunctional steering wheel (J453). The Infotainment bus is for: radio (R), navigation (J401). The Convenience bus is for: door control (J386/7/8/9), comfort system (J393), parking aid (J446), electrical (J519) & memory seat control (J136).
So from that I am hoping that the Convenience bus, since its already present can be tapped w/o adding an additional gateway and just using the R8 module, but I will have to confirm.

I feel like the k04 is a great daily option. Do you know what tune you're going to go with? I just got the new APR 'Stage 3' k04 tune with their beta file for my new RFD and am enjoying it.

I’m going with United Motorsports K04 tune. There’s a local dealer who is very well regarded (AMD) and I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback about them from everyone. Plus there is an upgrade path beyond k04 if later on down the line I’m feeling saucy.
