New High Altitude. I like it.

What engine did you end up with?

Wifeys still loving her CRD Grand. We get some excellent gas mileage. Mid-20's towing this up to 6000ft, and back down.

It's a V6. I'm kind of wishing I'd gotten the V8 now, but I remind myself I have no need for a V8. The diesel would be nice but added another $4k to the price. I bought this one on 12/31 at a price I couldn't pass up.

    Yeah for sure.

So basically what I've done is buy DOT compliant webbing. Pulled my seat belts out until fully extended and pinned it, then removed them. Ripped the seam on the end not connected to the tensioner/retractor and slid all the components out. Next I laid out the new webbing and cut it to the same length, slipped components back in place and installed a new black button (these are kinda expensive for what they are, they should be like $0.03 but they're not lol). At this point it is time for the most critical part and this is absolutely where the DIY ends unless you have a commercial or heavy-duty sewing machine that is either automatic stitch pattern or you are a highly qualified seamster or seamstress: you will now take your new webbing and retractor with old webbing still in tact to some such qualified person. They do not need to be DOT approved as long as they are competent or have an automatic pattern machine. The thread needs to be DOT compliant strength or greater, that is, type 138 nylon or greater (Tex 135, government FF, break strength 22#). The pattern needs to be a reinforcement stitch pattern as well.

There is one part that you need to personally take into consideration: the retractor cannot be opened up, so the new webbing cannot be fed through. What I did was have about 3" of new webbing sewn onto a little bit of the end of the old webbing. This is slightly sketch because the webbing should be wrapped around a pin at the end. BUT, when the seat belt is retracted it is wound around itself many, many times. Meaning the load on the reinforced stitch is much less than the loop of webbing at the other end. But for this reason I stitched a longer section and used size 277 with a 45# breaking strength on this end.

At this point the old webbing can be cut off after the new stitching and the belts can be re-installed.

It's a good idea to leave the belt fully extended until the are installed. There is a mechanism that locks the belt from extending if it is not level and it's hard to keep it still and fully upright in your hand and it might stay locked up on you.

I can post pictures later if anyone is curious.

Total cost for 4 seats (I have no rear center seat) was under $150.

*disclaimer: don't do this. If you do I am not liable because I told you not to do it ;)

Hmm, interesting. Yes, I would be interested in more pics. The places I looked at you basically mailed off the entire mechanism, picked your webbing and they would send it back all done. But cost was upwards of 5x what you paid. From what I read that included complete disassembly of the retractor/pretensioner assembly and wrapping the new webbing all around and the fancy reinforced stitching of everything. I assume you found a local place that was able to do the stitching? I looked at a few local places but it was hard to determine if they were qualified to do the work or not (from the little I was reading online).

I'm not sure what the other places do, but I have to assume you're right, that they disassemble the retractor. I just wasn't interested in the $700+ I was quoted when I searched.

I did find someone local. Best place to check is a leather tailor. They have heavy duty machines and will likely have automatic patterns. The rest is cake. Best to purchase your own thread to know what you have too, but if you trust the seamster/seamstress and they have this particular weight and type on hand then you could just go with that.

Dropping by in person can help a lot. I found the kind of place that had done everything and has been doing it forever.

Another place would be a parachute repair tailor. You can ask around for local small charter aircraft for contact info if you can't find anything online. They will be versed in these reinforced stitches, although they do not use as heavy type thread as DOT so you will likely need to supply.
