Is my front plate mount missing something? Plate doesn't fit?

Wow, feel silly but am trying to figure this out. I have a gloss black 3.2 front plate mount for the US sized plate - it all mounts perfectly etc.. However, the holes they have built into for the license plate are clearly too wide for a US plate. On my front plate mount that came factory with the car that is the gray plastic, they just sloppily drilled into it. Is this the only way? Seems a little silly.

I'm pretty sure mine was drilled in order to fit the LP onto it.

Fit my Euro plate perfectly. ;)

I think they made it intentionally like that so they did not have to make two separate parts. If you don't have a NA mount, then you need to buy one to attach to that piece.

I have a NA mount. It was extra for the 3.2 NA mount in addition to the 3.2 grill. 2 separate pieces.

The filler plate has two chrome strips on it. Once I removed that, it had an opening to fit my Euro plate. I would think the NA plate mount filled in that section like this:

Yep, but the holes that are already created in the plate are too wide for the holes in a NA plate. Wasnt sure if there was another piece I was missing or if its always just drilled into the plastic.

Also, I guess Id need a special drill bit to give it threads rather than just holes?

You can take the plate holder off and simply drill your own holes. Remove the screw on each far side in the space below the rings.

Ok, so it sounds like I must drill my own then. That seems a bit ghetto considering I bought the thing just to hold a US plate. Weird.

you mean the US licence plate braket doesn't fit the US plate properly? I never actually looked behind my plate. Interesting.

Had samething happen when I purchased car new, dealership had to drill holes to allow correct attachment of vanity plate, since that time went back to plate delete.

Precisely. See those two holes up top that one could only assume would be perfectly lined up for a US license plate? They're way off. Not nearly the correctly width. I couldn't believe it, hence why I was asking if I had missed something, some kind of other part that mounts on there behind the plate - I noticed that my dealership drilled into my factory gray front US plate holder to make the dealer plate work but naively assumed that was because their dealer plates were a weird size. For a car and automaker with fit and finish off the charts, I refused to believe the solution was to drill into my US plate holder to make a US plate fit. But that's the way I guess it must be :( . Even stranger how they clearly have it correct for the rear plate mount, it's not like the measurements were off, it's such a weird thing. We must be missing something.

I'm also pissed off. Spending $150 on an OEM part that needs to be modified is just insane.

Mine arrived today. I guess I am off to Lowes to hack this thing together. If anyone knows the proper way, please advise.

Yup, I just had to drill into the damn thing with new holes - what were they thinking putting those holes for US plates like that. It's pretty weak.

What did you guys use to fasten the plate? Nut and bolt? Or simply short self tapping screws?

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here. I know this is an old thread, but was wondering if anyone has any new findings. I just bought a Q5 with the front piece for a vanity plate, and rather than the standard 7" holes, it has two HUGE (too big for plate screws) holes 8.5" apart. I would like to avoid drilling into it, has anyone found an add-on or adapter for this?

For those who might say the only option is to drill, how did you do this? Was it with a special screw or nuts/bolts/washers...?

    Thanks!!!

The front plate (which was installed by the dealer) on my factory mount is held on by short self-tapping screws. I bet if you drop by the dealer they can just give you some, or at least tell you what size they use.
