Turbo despool when taking foot of gas?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

Maybe you can help me out. Earlier his year I started hearing a noise like a spinning fan that is slowing down coming from the passenger side of my 2006 B7 2.0T. It sounds like a turbo despooling and it only happens when I'm accelerating and then let go of the gas. I don't have to be accelerating too hard either.

Anyone else hear this when driving? I don't know if it's a new noise, or one that's always been there and I've only just started hearing. Still have a year left on my CPO too...

    Thanks in advance!

No too sure, you may have better luck posting it in the A4 section though since the S4's dont have turbo's on them. Good luck

post a soundclip. what you think is a "despooling" sound might be a completely different sound to someone else.

Could be the DV flutter people talk so much about. if you have an old DV you might need to buy the upgraded piston type DV. its an OEM part. LINK

I have a sound, which isn't very loud, but comes for just a second when I get off the throttle. Its much more noticeable at low rpms because the engine isn't so loud. Its like a 'whoosh' sound of air being suctioned. Is that normal turbo-despool, or does that indicate a bad DV?

I hear this exact thing too. It is your turbo but when I first started noticing it thought something was wrong too. But its normal, specially if ur chipped or modded your intake.

I'm running completely stock. I'll take a sound clip tonight and post it on here. It only happens while driving, not while accelerating in neutral, so I might have to find a creative way to get the sound recorded..

What you are hearing isn't the turbo 'despooling' (nice word).

It's either just the normal Diverter Valve sound or possbly a failing DV. When you let off the throttle in boost the DV releases the pressurized air back into the intake. The more throttle and quicker you release it, the louder the sound will be. Its normal, but should be barely noticeable if you are completely stock. If its loud or very noticeable, the DV could be failing. You cannot reproduce the sound in neutral because the turbo only builds boost under load, so it must be while in gear (driving).

thanks b6, makes sense. the noise reminded me of a fan/turbine slowing down,
anything i can look for in vag, or should i be visually inspecting the dv for cracks?

The noise I hear is probably only perceptible to me its so quite, it just makes me wonder. I imagine it could be a failed DV considering my gt3071r, but my dyno yesterday didn't show any problems. I wish I could actually find where the hell my DV is located now, I can't find it from under the hood or under the engine. Can anyone tell me where to look for it?

It should be somewhere around your turbo... bigger turbo setups usually have them connected to the intercooler piping on the turbo side of the car...

I have been looking for something directly bolted to the turbo, and haven't found anything, but I do have something with an electrical harness attached to my intercooler piping, its black, about 1.5 inches wide and a few inches deep, could that be the DV?

I can hear this sound on my car. Does it go pewwwwwwwwwwwww?? You can recreate it by developing a steady amount of boost at low rpms, then slowly taking your foot off the gas without completely removing it. The longer it takes you to completely remove your foot, the longer the sound will go on for. This might be what the DV sounds like at low rpms but multiple people have told me its despool.

It's more of a verrrrrrrr-rr-**-r---r than a pew. Think a jet engine turbine slowing down, but obviously a different pitch and not as loud...

I had this exact issue. I changed my DV (old version) sound went away and came back now. Just not a flutter and I only get the turbine whine when I shut the car off and usually this is after extended driving at speed or pulling hard long pulls. I would also like to know what this whine is as a new piston type DV was swapped in. I also would like to know how this is fixed I am still under warranty too.

Georgio, very similar to the one you just posted.

Just ran a fault code check in VCDS (I broke my old laptop and had to install parallels on my gfs mac...) and I got intermittent errors in the boost pressure control valve, which is strange because I would suspect I'd at least get a CEL with that.

    008801 - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249)
    P2261 - 008 - Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent

I'll be taking it in to the dealership since I'm still under warranty.

    Will keep you guys posted!

Edit: found the exact same thing from a few years back: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-acceleration?

From what I see others are doing, most opt to change out the turbo since the K03 has an internal wastegate. I havent had boost leak from mines yet so leave it until I plan to upgrade the turbo.

That's good to know, might as well drop a word with a mechanic I know as he seems to get all sorts of cars including wrecked Audi's from time to time.

Well the thing is, I'm not sure if its the wastegate pivot that's in the turbine housing itself or if its the wg actuator.
If I were out of warranty I'd be snooping around, but I'm not gonna complain if they want to replace the whole turbo.
