I blew my engine a few weeks ago… just finally confirmed doing a compression test and leak down test. Piston rings are shot.

The real question is… Should I go full retard and build a sleeper or just buy a used engine and swap it in. TBD

Let me be the first to congratulate you. I assume you have a 1.8t? You have to buy parts now. Just buy fast parts. We need more fast Avants. It's not like your options are spend no money or spend money. You're spending money, it's not my money, so just spend more of it.

There. Free advice. Now, go build some big turbo sleeper wagon, and tell us how it goes. Look at the K04-64. Something-something adapter plate, more than just a K04-15. Look at what Kevin did.

rebuild your engine as-is but upgrade pistons and rods to a decent non tapered forged option. Cheap eagle rods or similar, and whatever pistons you can get a deal on. Then go full retard later. Nothing wrong with running a built motor on a stock turbo and file. it’ll be there when you need it. go half mil overbore if the cylinder walls are trashed, but it’s cast iron you’ll probably be fine with a hone.

I’ve bought a handful of junkyard engines but these things are so old, good luck finding one with less than a quarter mil miles. regardless they need to be fully stripped down anyways or I wouldn’t trust it. Unless you find an old stock crate engine with no miles for a grand lol, then just rebuild what you got.

I’m probably going to do IE pistons and rods. Maybe do a stroker crank but not bore it to 2.0t. Upgrade the valve train.

I already have installed an FMIC, 550cc inj. Tune, hi flow cat, exhaust.

    So...

My experience with Audi Tradition was very pleasurable and far better than I've expected. Since my country entered the "Schengen Area" this year; no land borders means flawless shipping; so it came very well packed and took about 10 days to be here. Here is a little 'dream' of mine that now became reality: Brand New S4 Grille straight from Ingolstadt factory :)

(of course I couldn't just clip it in without taking care of some little details first, like cleaning and waxing behind the grille and applying new 3M double-sided Butyl tape and some silicone to the bottom rubber trim)

Wow that looks nice! Kind of want one of those grills

Washed mine today, nice and shiny. Sadly the headlight washer cover broke off, need to epoxy it back together or something.

I cleaned up the mess of loose wires that basically defined the theme for the inside of my car. A little bit of that plastic corrugated wire protector stuff goes a long way!

Also, I mostly installed a driveshaft hoop. That wasn't as easy as I wanted it to be, because the part I bought seemed to be a universal fit thing, and we all know how that never works. I had to beat the crap out of the brackets until they were a completely different shape, and now progress on the whole thing is stuck where it is until I get someone who can operate the impact driver inside the cabin while I hold a wrench under the car. I think SCCA wants me to install TWO of these things. I might make my own for the second one.

Oh the dash is mostly back in and everything is hooked up to it! Fire suppression, kill switch, and my home-made HVAC stuff. It doesn't feel like much progress, but I guess it's moving right along.

Custom HVAC? That sounds cool. Yeah those corrugated plastic channels are awesome.

What if you welded one side of the bolt? Or make a bracket for the other side that keeps both nuts attached to each other so you don't need to hold them steady while you bolt the loop on? And if you need to put the bolts in from the bottom you could probably create a special piece of card paper that you push the bolts into so they don't fall out, or pull them up with a magnet.

Custom HVAC is really just a blower fan I got on Summit Racing that has a heater core and two 3" round ducts on it. I printed an adapter that I shoved into the back of one of the center dash vents to blow air on me, and I bought a piece for the defrost area. I ran 3" air hoses to each. It should work well, plus it's smaller than the stock setup.

Welding the bolts isnt a bad idea. I kind of need them to be able to sort of move around a little while everything is tightening though. You know how it can be when you're bolting a thing that you beat with a hammer up to a sort of roundish tube that you haphazardly bored holes into in a hurry because you were freezing on the garage floor and your kids were being impatient? No? Oh. Well... that. They need some wiggle room while they get tightened. I think. Or the trans tunnel will just bend, which I guess is fine too.

    Hey everybody !

Had a couple of sunny days around here, just enough to do some little things...
So I took some good care of the USP bumper grille with a few coats of Plasti Dip (and managed to get my whole kitchen covered with that stuff, even though I wrapped everything up) and some black molten plastic to strengthen all of its grooves. - even used a bit of carbon fiber where broken ;)

Also painted the rear license plate bezel while I was at it... (scraped the factory foam tape off the trunk lid, cleaned, polished and waxed it all and applied new 3M tape and fixed the plate with two color matched screws)

The next on my list was replacing all the center console accessories (ESP, Hazards, Cup Holder & Card Tray) with B7 ones, of which I found a set in MINT condition. (except the white triangles - obviously - which I've spent about 2 hours repainting them with a toothpick) Whaddya say ? MADNESS?

I finished the (front) driveshaft hoop installation. I had to beat the snot out of it with a hammer to reshape the "universal" kit from Summit Racing, but now it fits happily in the transmission tunnel. It was actually quite satisfying to bolt those upper and lower U shape bits to it because--well--that part was easy, and all I had to do was let my electric ratchet torque the bolts down and I was done (torque = tighten them till they loosen up, then back off a quarter turn). I will reinforce the cracks there so it doesn't fall apart.

Also, you can see my shiny new downpipe in the front of the car and how it definitely doesn't mate up with the rest of the exhaust kit. I "solved" that "problem" by using some of that flexible exhaust pipe repair stuff. It's much quieter now than it was when it was just an open pipe from the turbo (cutting the mufflers off should remedy that), but since there's no catalytic converter anymore, the sound coming through the tailpipes is much more fun. I wouldn't want to drive it to work like this, but it should sound good against the backdrop of a sea of 9,000 RPM Honda H-series motors. I will attach a new exhaust hanger strap thingy to one of the bolts for the drive shaft hoop to hold it in place better in the future.

Also, I yanked the front bumper off. I'm going to install a tow strap onto it, but I'll get to that later. The other reason I want the bumper off is because we can strap it to a dyno a little easier on Friday. I've never even seen a dyno in-person, so I'm excited about this week. I am not expecting a lot of power--I just need a value to provide to USTCC so they can tell me my minimum weight.

Does anybody have any tips for dyno work? Any guidance on strapping the car down? I can log stuff with my laptop--I guess I can bring that with me. Does anybody have any particular parameters that you suggest I log?

    Anyway, NVH level up! +5

For me that walk requires me to visit it in the body shop. It's been in there a month waiting on parts, I definitely miss driving it.

I got to take the car to the dyno today. I've never seen anything quite like it in person, so it was a cool experience. I partly wanted to get some numbers to share with the folks who developed this particular tune on the nefmoto forum. Make some contribution to that effort... I don't know. Hopefully it's useful.

I also needed numbers for racing. We are a power to weight group. I need to declare something. Now I have something to declare.

Oh, uh, let's see. There's a test pipe on the car, 2.5" exhaust, and some sort of simplified aftermarket exhaust system on there.

Oh, and the car overheated and shot coolant out. (Sorry again Grant!) I don't know why that happened, but my guess is that I introduced air into the system and we enraged that air bubble. I suspect some coolant line has a tiny hole in it.

These days I've managed to acquire a pair on OEM mufflers in a very good condition (since mine are cut and re-welded in a very outta shape misaligned, UGLY way) and brand new Ulter Sport 4" exhaust tips as a match...
Also got some free days at home just perfect for taking some good care of them before welding onto the car on Friday. I'll try to keep everybody in touch if it's gonna come out the way I want to. Wish me luck, Happy Wrenching !

    Talking Exhaust(-ed)

    Hi dear people !

As promissed, a little update on my (not so :) little work: what have I done ? Well, simply replaced the cut and (horribly ) re-welded rear mufflers that were on the car with a pair from a B7 1.8T. The fact is, they weren't AT ALL like this when I got 'em. They were scratched, dirty, oxidized and the pipes were very rusty... simply DISGUSTING.
14 hours, some good amounts of water and degreaser, a wirebrush, two sponges and a tube of Autosol metal polish later... Voila ! (the boys at the welding shop were wondering if they were new :)
Back to GLORY ! No more rust and check out that muscle car chrome-like shine ! For the exhaust tips I went with Ulter Sport's N1-101RS 4" chrome ones. (had lots of thoughts between 3.5" and 4" but I don't regret it at all !

Then back home I've made some more adjustments and painted the clamps and welds with aluminum bronze lacquer for further protection. Forged the bolts and added new nuts and washers and some high temp grease. (oh, and I chose to have the mufflers installed with clamps instead of welds; since stainless steel seems more durable to me, not to mention Bosal quality) Overall, very satisfied with both the look and the sound (the 'new' ones are more permissive so they make a really nice burble and some pops ) not to mention that they are sticking out just as much as I chose them to.

Dani's exhaust work is expert-level as always! That looks good, and the tips are awesome! Did that car make it into the calendar this year?

I did some precision bodywork this weekend. You know, with an angle grinder. (That front bumper beam is tough!) Now, I have a tow strap right where I need it, and it's hooked up through that long bolt that holds the bumper to the crash bars.

I also carefully removed the headlight washers by first, stripping one of the screws on each unit, and then getting impatient, snapping them off by hand. The little doors are glued to the bumper now. Horns, hoses and wiring, and the garage door opener are now gone. The bumper is now a little lighter and a lot easier to install on the car!

Thanks for the kind words, Mike ! Truly means A LOT... Well, body work is something that I should take care like for real ! I'm lucky that the pictures do a nice job hiding. You've put some true work into your car too, and that's just great ! Sharing each other's projects status is great too ! Good luck with each future work !

Brakes are done! They work better than ever with the new not- ruined booster.

We removed the junk oil pressure gauge and reinstalled the oil pressure test port cap, thus correcting the oil leak.

I painted the rest of the cage. (It's actually kind of fun. I don't know why I drug my feet for so long.)

I put some decals on and test fit others. Still more to go there but I need series sponsor decals first.

We knocked out a ton of other things too. It was actually a pretty grueling day.

Those wheels aren't too heavy for this purpose? I have those as my winter beaters and they are almost the same weight as my summer 18"s.

We certainly have our fair share of idiotic rules in the US, but wheel size? On a car that is well suited to support 18" wheels. I mean the S4 and USP both came with 18's.

I was able to find some other drivers to hang out with until I burned the pads off of the car (they were getting low). It did a solid three sessions and may have had a fourth left in it.

Lunch was pretty good, too. It was well worth all the effort.

Another few days of creation let's say...

See, I've always had a thing for OEM trunk lid badges on USP cars. (which mine never had btw) So after 2 wrong orders and more than 50$ worth of useless rings that wouldn't fit I've managed to acquire them all. I chose the one with a red "T" from A3 8L (or just USP in the US) as a little detail. But here it comes... fitting a RS4 bumper molding (for the unique color :) on a B6 A4. Basically I spend like 12 hours in total carving the bumper edge under it (since the bending angle was wider) and cutting about 1/4" from the back of the molding itself. Then I literally 'bond-welded' it with 3M double-sided tape and filled the gaps with windshield adhesive... madness!
Some polish, wax and measuring later, Voila ! Tomorrow I'll take her for a drive and a well-deserved bath after months of dust collecting. Can't wait !

Removed all the 35w HID headlights / high beam lights + ballast I installed back in 2009 and went back to factory H7 halogen bulbs. Trying to clean up the engine bay and go back to OEM.

Cleaned the interior and replaced the headlight adjustment switch (DRL switch for some of you with xenons) and also went for a drive :)
