    Wipers stay on when car is off

    Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the wipers are supposed to go off with the key or not? If my wipers are on and I turn the ignition off they will keep wiping until I shut the switch off. Is this normal or do I maybe have a relay stuck open? I am getting a 2 amp power draw when the car is off and I'm trying to trace the issue down.

    They shut off automatically. I have never tried to cut off my vehicle while wiper was in motion (to see if it will stop), but I have forgot to turn the switch to the off position off before I turned off my vehicle. Then upon ignition, the wiper will make a full sweep. But it def does not operate with no key in the ignition.

    Sounds like a relay is being stuck open then. Any idea where I can find the relay controlling the wipers?

    Does anything else remain on? How about the horn or radio or low beam headlamps?

    2 Amp draw is pretty significant. I'm thinking perhaps the load reduction relay is the culprit. But you didn't tell us what year your car is, so I can't tell you where that relay is (year matters for this item).

    Just want to let you guys know the new ignition switch seems to have fixed the problem!

    Hey, thanks for the update. That's great.

    I *love* armchair diagnostics. I merely say the words and crap gets fixed. It's pretty awesome. I only wish it was that easy on my own car, lqtm.

    Haha sorry about that. The car is a 99.5 1.8T. The headlights will also go on when the car is turned off and the key is out.

    Ding, Ding, Ding. Headlights should not be operable with key out. That rules out failure of the Load Reduction Relay (I was pretty skeptical of this anyway).

    Failure is the ignition switch.

    I was thinking that was a possibility also. Well worth a shot since it is a cheap enough part to replace. looks to be like $15 on ECS. I assume I'll have to remove it first and see what color the switch is.

    With a 99.5 you should have the white/black switch (but not a bad idea to check first). Looks like ECS has a cheapy for 10 bucks, but it's out of stock. Best bet is probably getting it at the dealer for $25-ish and no shipping charge.

    Well I ordered the white/black one since everything I've seen online points to that being the correct part. I'll take my chances and if it's wrong I'll just have to return it. All the local Audi dealers wanted $68 for it. Hopefully removing the steering wheel to do this isn't too much of a pain in the ass.
