    LS1 T56 swap in the b6 A4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was thinking why not swap a LS1 5.7 and a 6 speed T56 trans into a b6 a4. iv seen people do it in 350zs, M5s, rx7s. Why not a b6 A4? I know what your saying... Why not just sell the a4 and get a trans am or camaro. I love the b6 A4 body style there is just something about it and I cant stand the GM interiors yuk. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of something like this or similar. Frankly the S4 is still holding its value and my 1.8 A4 will get $6000 tops if I can get anyone to even buy it with that damn slipping cvt. I got $3000 to spend on this project and I have decent welding fabing skills. Lol hopefully I dont offend anyone. Tell me what you guys think. BTW the only way id do it is with independent rear suspension!!

You're going to need incredible welding and fab skills to pull this off, but considering you're starting with a cvt, I say go for it.

Do it, shouldn't be to hard at all honestly, and you could do it for probably around your price range if you can get a 5.7 for cheapish....i would say go for it all the way

first you need to do an 01E swap on it. Then you need to get the adapter plate that's available for the swap and you're all set.

Ya know, I use to be in the JDM scene a few years back when swapping LS1/LS7s into FC RX7s and 240SXs was in it's infancy. I used to call it blasphemy (which it is-nothing beats the sound of a ported rotary in my book), but for the power-to-weight ratio and price of these motors, it's perfect. Just know that you're almost on your own here, with the exception of the B5 guy that Don stated above. I haven't heard any even consider this on AZ, but good luck to you if you go through with it.

I have seen totaled vettes sell at a near by auction for $2600, i would say that would be your best bet. The only thing i see hard is getting all of the other systems to function normally. It would be much easier to do it to a designated track car so you wouldnt care about ac or abs ect. Just my 2¢. But DO IT!

I know someone that's considering it on a B6 but he's still thinking about the project. Wanted to get all the ducks in a row before he starts.

If it can be done in an E30, then it can be done in an A4, a car that has had a V8 in it from the factory. I think the mechanical side of it with engine mount and trans would be the easy part. Those pesky electronics would be the problem for me.

just run a standalone on the engine and leave the factory ECU in place.

All I can say is deep pockets or lack thereof will affect this project. 3000 will not get you far at all unfortunately.

I don't think anyone has said it can not be done.

As with any project (even a 1.8T making 400awhp) there are technical challenges with getting the whole package to work properly. Properly being whatever you define as acceptable to you. If it were mine, I would demand OEM functionality for all features in my A4 with whatever engine or engine package I put in there. THAT.... is difficult to do with certain swaps. Hence, technical challenges that must be overcome.

Yeah but the E30 came with an inline 6, which is a fairly long engine. How long is an LS1?

I agree Doug, I am not saying it's a plug and play, bolt that shit in and lets boil the tires thing. It isn't going to be super easy, but definately doable as there is probably a ton of info out there of swaps into other projects. I forget that cvt=fwd, so the ass end isn't in place, so quattro drivetrain swap is easier than LS1 swap all in all. (I don't know what's required to mate a flywheel to a CVT crank if they're different)

There are hundred of little technical challenges to overcome, it just seemed like OP was wondering if it's possible, pie in the sky sort of thing. Sort of like, no the engine physically won't fit, or yes, just buy these motor mounts and away you go.
Also we just finished one of those round peg in a square hole kind of jobs here in the shop so today, anything is possible it seems :)

I know of 2 Audi's that have this project in the works right now.

jdmdon in the B6/7 S4 section is doing it to his Nogaro B6 S4
    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ossin-b6-build.

and "timmmy" who mainly resides on motorgeek (and has incredible fab skills) is swapping one into his RS6 build car "Project Judas"
    http://motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39901

Personally I think the jury is still out on whether or not jdmdon is going to get it to fit into his B6. "Jimmmy" is having to do a lot of work to fit it into his RS6 body and I'd think there's more room front-to-back in a C5 RS6 than there is in a B6 body
