    Question clutch fan question..

quick question about the clutch fan,

not sure what i was thinking but when i was removing the fan there is a metal peice which goes across and i thought there was a bolt behind it so i took that off then figured that it was only held by the 4 hex

behind the metal rectangular logo there is a pin which sort of pushes in, i wonder if this metal is supposed serve the purpose of pushing that pin constantly in or can you go without it?

i managed to place the metal thing back on and used a sealant to secure it in place where its pushing the pin in which is on the back

is there really a use for that metal thing or can you go without it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/98-99-00-01-...item415759ae25

    thanks

My guess is that the engineers would not be concerned with aesthetics on a viscous fan clutch. Therefore, it likely services a functional purpose. You may have a problem with fluid leaks and if it were my car, I would replace the clutch now that you've damaged it.

x2 on that, I would simply replace it to place it safe. That way you know you'll be replacing it with a brand new one, and not have to play around with it if you re-installed the old fan clutch. It's cheap enough where I wouldn't bother getting one used. A used fan might have as much wear on it as your current one, and wouldn't come with a warranty on it.

    hey thanks for response,

just so that we are talking about the same thing here, this is basically my clutch fan (http://uploadpic.org/storage/2011/NY...GEkFAJKQoA.jpg) the red circles the metal clip which i removed which is held together by the white glue thing circled in the yellow...

i managed to put the original one back on and used a cilicone sealant to put it back on its place and stick it ...

let me know what you think..
    Thanks

That would be the fan clutch! I just had to replace the one on my '01.5 Passat, you couldn't believe the difference having a new one installed made!
