STASIS Exhaust - Drone equal to tip length

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just got my STASIS exhaust installed today. Took longer than I thought (about 5 hours with a lunch break). The big finding for me was that I had a pretty strong drone inside the car around 2-2.3k rpms. Outside sounded great, but inside driving it was annoying. To say the least I was pretty unhappy after 5 hours and $1k later. I

Well, I had originally placed the tips under the bumper so that they were not visible and the exhaust was stealth. I decided to try to extend them out a little to see how it effected the drone. WOW, the drone almost disappeared completely, and the tone is really pleasant now. I can't believe how dependent the drone was on the tip length, but all I can say now is if you have drone issues, "stick those babies out as far as they go" and the drone will be significantly reduced (almost gone).

Gotta try this with my AWE exhaust. Even with my trunk sound proofed it can get a little annoying at times.

The only thing I can think is that they were projecting sound basically into the inside of my bumper. Now I have them all the way out and it is noticeably less drone. I am worried that if I stick them out more that they won't stay on though, so I am thinking about how to extend them just to test it out to see if there is any improvement with more length once they are no longer tucked under the bumper. I found a couple of forum threads for mustangs and LS1 that have similar results, and also good results with adding resonator tips (these are tips with baffles in them). Since they are only about $25, I might order them and test it out for the hell of it.

Did you get the exhaust for performance or for the sound of it? I Couldn't justify spending almost 1k on an exhaust system then it being so annoying i try to dampen it. Good thing you figured this out though. I cant even imagine what some of those fartcan exhausts on civics sound like inside when they are tucked under the bumper. Jesus christ. lol

nice find, curious to see if this will work on AWE as well. And when you say you stuck them out a little more, about how much are you talking? like a centimeter or two or more like a couple inches.

Not the thread jack but how did u sound proof ur trunk? My custom exhaust is so loud, I believe it's even louder than awe. I have a lot of drone n the tips stick out a little not too much though.

I have the same exhaust, and it puts my 5 month old daughter to sleep almost instantly when i get to a cruising speed. I love the drone for that reason alone. my tips stick out about an inch from the cut out.

I moved it from being tucked under the valence to sticking out about half an inch. It helped a lot for around town driving. Actually I think it is pretty close to what I want for city driving. I just got to Portland about 30 minutes ago (about a 2.5 hour freeway drive from Eugene) and it drones at freeway speeds still. Not a bunch, and if I was 18 instead of 35, I would say it is kosher for the freeway too. However, it is too strong at 2-3k rpm for me. I got the exhaust because I am dropping a k04 in next month, so it is for performance and not the sound. I love the quality of work, so I am going to go to a custom muffler shop and have them cut the STASIS mufflers out and weld in some BORLA turbo SS mufflers. These flow way more than enoug and should cut out he freeway drone. I guess I am going to have the only STASIS/BORLA custom exhaust around. Let me know if anyone wants the STASIS mufflers; they have about 200 miles on them.

What size are they borla mufflers (how much bigger are they compared to stasis)? I have tried various setups with my custom exhaust and bigger rear mufflers doesn't always help with drone, the exhaust might sound deeper but the drone would still be there.

Oh; well now you got me thinking about what is the right approach. I was going to go to 20" turbo style mufflers, as they are not straight through like the STASIS design. Most of the reports of drone I read online are with respect to straight through designes, so the thinking is "get rid of the straight throughs". Don't know if this is right or not. The only other thing I was thinking is to put another set of stainless steel resonators just upstream of the mufflers. I would probably go with a set of 12" resonators.

However, looking at BORLA, they don't offer non-straight throughs that match what I am looking for, so the mufflers I am looking at are these Dynomax http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=superturbo

audib7maniac - forgot to answer your question; I have not applied any sound deadning to my car. I believe the exhaust should sound right regardless of any sound proofing, however, after saying that, I am going to add sound proofing for road noise purposes. I haven't started this effort yet.

I thought I had more or less decided that STASIS was the way to go for an exhaust, but this has me seriously second guessing that decision. Much like the OP I would prefer an exhaust that has some performance benefit and is only noticeably audible when you really get on it. Highway drone is not cool. Back to the drawing board I guess...

OP, I will be following this thread for updates on your attempts to solve the drone issue.

Well, from my own experience, I switched from a pair of straight through magnaflow mufflers (14324) to their "chambered" xl turbo mufflers (13256), it didn't make a darn difference to my ears. Mind you I have a stage 3 turbo and tiptronic.
