    Air flow question

Has anyone removed the screen that sits just beyond the MAF sensor? Just curious if this would allow better air flow into the manifold without causing a CEL.

It's the snow screen, and yes, yes, and no. You can remove it, it will help, and it won't cause a CEL light.

Try this: Take it out and hold it in your hand. Put your arm a few inches behind it and blow through it. Note how little air you feel on your arm. Then just take your hand with the screen away and blow the same way on your arm. So yes, it's CRAP for flow. Eventually I'll get around to quantifying the difference with and without, but suffice to say go ahead and take it out if you're not worried about snow.

I think he mean the "screen" in the MAF housing

    Check out this link.. http://gmtips.com/3rd-degree/dox/tip...maf-screen.htm

I'm not sure the gain, if any would be worth it anyways. Do you have a 034 intake tube from JHM or anything? I'm sure your looking for free HP, but this isn't a 4G63T Mitsu, it's an Audi, and NA.

No don't remove the one on the MAF housing. Every MAF I have seen has a screen like that of some sort so it's there for a reason.

If you're talking about the one in the intake snorkel, throw it away

I rmember doing that back in the late 90's early 2000 on dsm's. The cars never ran right after messing with the MAF. I would not even think about doing it on the S4

its a flow straightener to help the MAF read better, removing it will marginally improve flow but the question to ask is if it is a restriction (it is not relative to other parts).
You represent the idiocy of today.

Right. It probably won't help flow much, since it's not really that restrictive. But moreover, if you remove the flow straightener from the MAF, the MAF will read much less accurately. You'll likely lose a lot of power, and have a car that stumbles and misfires almost constantly.

My bad, for some reason I thought he meant the snow screen. I didn't read carefully and I couldn't imagine someone wanting to remove the flow straightener.

Since someone mentioned the 034 intake tube, Joe I see you have one in your signature. Did you notice any difference....?

I mentioned it because I have one, I was only asking him because that is an obvious way to increase flow, and not a very expensive mod. I honesty can't say the difference though because I did my JHM tune, 2.5" cat less downpipes, FI cat back all at once. So my car went through a drastic change in a few days. I would imagine it improves response on a stock car, with stock TB and manifold, but it's probably going to work best mated up to a JHM ported TB and intake manifold.

Thanks for the answers. I will not remove the screen in the MAF tube. I was just wondering and that is why I asked the question.

    Thanks

Nope no noticeable difference. But it's one of those "small piece of the puzzle" things. The silicone reflects some heat and it won't generate unwanted turbulence like the oem one.

    And it looks cool

Typically those screens are there to smooth out the airflow.

Actually some tumbling is needed so the fuel atomizes properly. That's why the inside of an IM is typically NOT mirror-smooth.

Absolutely. I personally think it's a decent litmus test for a shop before you hand a cylinder head off to them for basic work, like new guides, valve job, etc. Ask them about port and polish work, and ask if they only polish the exhaust side or both sides. If they say they'd polish the inlet side, go elsewhere.
