car is a 2001 A4 1.8tqm. Heater has always worked never any problems. The temp outside last night here was 32 so when i get out to my car this morning everything is covered in ice I get in the car start it. Then I turn the rear defrost on it works but the front defroster does not come on like it always does when i hit the rear one. so i try to hit the buttons and nothing happens. the display does not come on or any lights the only light that is on is the red light for the off switch cause it is all off. Has anyone got any ideas or had this happen? I checked the fuses all are good.

I highly suspect the hvac control unit. Sounds like it has power since the red "off" light is still illuminated.

I will check into all the ideas. i was tired and ready to go home so did not spend a lot of time there in the parking lot going to go in earlier tonight and see if it will kick on after sitting in the 65 degree weather all day. I ended up driving the wifes car home since she works day shift

Try to get your hands on a "known good" HVAC control head and swap it in place of your unit. This is where I would start.

Just got to work and started the car and guess what the heater is on and everything is working. Now to figure out why it did it to begin with the fun begins
