Is it possible to flush updated software onto CVT TCU via VAG-COM VCDS?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello y'all,

I bought an 2005 Audi A4 2.0 FSI, CVT 01J, FWD at 80k miles with transmission problems for a reasonable price as a project car with the hope of fixing the CVT at home.

Dashboard has been flashing "P R D N S" and I believe TCU is limiting the power output to the wheels. Car hesitates to accelerate, especially has very hard time to go up even the smallest incline.

I have been using the VAG-COM software version 409 with my cheap third-party cable to successfully communicate with the ECU of 1999 VW Passat 1.8T.

However it would not work with the 2005 Audi, and I am thinking about ordering the VAG-COM cable from Ross-Tech.

    My question is;
1-) if that's possible to update the TCU with the latest software using VCDS or VCDS-Lite software.

Thanks for your time to read this long post,

    Ok,
Then I guess letting dealer to flush the software is the only way?
    Thanks...

That is a major problem, CVT is the best..... but the probem for sure is the metallic belt or pullers that is the transmit the torque between 2 axes.

Check this for total knowledge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L21DfzqurD4

but repair is a mayor work for any mechanic. Only Fixeuro can repair for less money otherwise the dealer is the option for more, more money :(

If you can source a fwd manual tranny for cheap since it is a project car anyway why not try a conversion? I will be doing this the next time my cvt breaks.

Thanks for the youtube link. Yes, this is a major problem with CVTs.
The thing is that, I have not heard any mechanical/metallic noises from the transmission, and this is way i thought it might only be the Transmission Control Unit.
So, I guess I'll have to wait until I got the VCDS cable and pull the codes from TCU.
I think, replacing only TCU with a new one would be cheaper than getting the whole transmission rebuild by Fixeuro.
However, if I have to rebuild the unit, I'll send it to Fixeuro most probably...
    Thanks...

most people dont go that route, because the cars with a cvt have a different crankshaft.

My first thought was conversion but some friends told me that it would be a major work and I might need to do a lot of customizing like welding and cutting to make it fit which I can't.
Is there any DIY for a automatic to manual conversion around here?
I found one for Ford Mustang and it looks like a lot of custom stuff.
So probably, fixing and selling this one and buying an B7 A4 with manual 6spd would be better:)
    Thanks for the suggestion though....

    Hello,

I have been searching for tools to remove the transmission.
I've just bought VAG-COM a few days ago. Will be running a diagnostic today.

Now, I need to buy high enough "jack stands" and a "floor jack" to be able to hold the car high enough for taking transmission out.

Is there any source of information about how much is the height of a CVT transmission? (2005.5 Audi A4 2.0T FSI CVT)

I am planning to buy following jack stands with "Max. Lift Height (in.) 28 9/32"
    http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...0725_200330725

and the floor jack with "Max. Lift Height (in.) 31.4"
    http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...9257_200349257

I might buy a low profile transmission jack to secure it while removing and putting it back in there.

    Any input appreciated.

    Thanks...

I'm 100% sure you can flush you TCU with any standard toilet. THe only issues you might run into is the TCU housing being too large for the downspout and thus it wont flush all the way and will likely brick your TCU....

I have never dropped the trans on an A4 before, but wouldn't it be easier to buy/rent a cherry picker and just pull the whole motor/trans out?

    Hello all,

I just had a chance to scan the car with VAG-COM couple days ago, and reset the TCM.
Below are the DTC's that were stored in the module.
    After the reset flashing "P R N D S" stopped.
However, since the battery was dead, I could not test the car on the road.

18149 - Clutch Pressure Adaptation: Limit Reached
    P1741 - 000 - - - Intermittent

17106 - Transmission Output Speed Sensor (G195): No Signal
    P0722 - 000 - - - Intermittent

17114 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio
    P0730 - 000 - - - Intermittent

18201 - Transmission Output Speed Sensor 2 (G196): No Signal
    P1793 - 000 - - - Intermittent

18151 - Clutch Slip Monitoring: Signal too Large
    P1743 - 000 - -

Any suggestions about what direction should I go?

I already have the CVT fluid, internal filter(01J301517D) and gasket(01J301475N) at hand.
My first shot will be to replace the fluid along with the filter this weekend.

    Thanks for any input....

Can you elaborate? Different as in it has a bushing that the manuals dont or vise versa do have? I have done conversions on other cars that required me to either install or remove a bushing for the manual tranny input shaft. Not sure if this is the case, but it does not seem to make sense for audi to use a totally different crank for just for the cvt. It might however have a different part # because of the installed bushing, i know this is what other car manufacturers do.
