Is anyone else never get even 200 miles per tank?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So far since owning the car (not that long) I've only gotten over 200 miles from a tank once. That was on a road trip with a lot of highway driving, and even then I only managed 18.5mpg per my own calculation (not the trip computer).

Mostly city driving, but even when I take it easy I'm getting 160-170 miles per tank, and I put in about 12-13 gallons at that range. My old RS4 had WAY better mileage and I was always flooring it in that car to hear the exhaust sing.

I guess I'm just a bit shocked at how bad it is. Not hearing any noise from the fuel filter, but maybe I should change it. Will that help? Car has 76k miles.

I was just looking at the B6/B7 what to know before buying thread and it said 200-250 per tank. I can't imagine getting 250 from a tank even on a road trip driving like a grandma.

I drive a B7 daily, I always get 250 a tank. I mostly drive in the burbs w/ some HW. I could see how I could get less though if I wanted too!

I need to check the tire pressure myself, but when I bought it they put a new tire on it and the tech report said they checked the pressure on all four. Paperwork I got with the car said air filter was replaced at the 75k maintenance(in july), but I'll check it to make sure it was done.

That's why Im thinking maybe the fuel filter is clogged.

220 with a heavy foot is what I was hoping for. :(

Tires are good, filter maybe. I researched and 250 seemed to be the number to expect. I think it was in a FAQ somewhere here or on the EA site. I drive it fairly hard on the HW but on the roads around here I have to take it slow. Off the line not so much but once I hit speed I need to back down.

When I first got my S i was getting right at 200 a tank. I replace the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, all the coil packs and checked all my tires. I get right around 240-250 a tank now.

Sorry replied to the wrong post... I am taking it in shortly for the 35K maintenance and I'll see what they say about the general state of filters and such... I also had to replace my coil packs not too long ago and I had them do my plugs as well. Did not appear to impact my MPT at all.

That sounds about right to me. Our S4 is used mostly for weekends and gets a mixture of city and highway plus my Sunday morning jaunts which usually has the dash MPG showing under 10MPG. The best I have done on the hi-way is around 270-280 per tank and that is cruising at 80-90MPH, I have only seen 300 miles on a tank a couple times in the last two years. These cars do not get good MPG.

    Cheers,
    Jim

I know the mpg isn't great, but it seems mine is unusually bad. I just took a road trip, and I was stoked to see 219 miles on the gauge before I filled up. I put in 12.9 gallons of gas which gave me 17mpg on a all highway trip that I was in 6th gear all the time. Somethings up.

My plugs were absolutely shot when I bought mine at 70k. PO had followed the maintenance schedule and they were gone. So its a possibility yours need replacing as well. BIG improvement in mileage after I swapped those.

Check the Fuel Regualtor too. I have an a3, i know different car, but i was getting awful mileage when i first bought it. Then I had a problem, took it into the dealer, they checked it out and replaced the fuel regulator. Now i get about 50 more miles per tank than i was before.

    Do this:
    -Spark plugs
    -Fuel filter
    -clean your throttle body
    -Go 2.5" catless exhaust
    -JHM tune.

    I get 230-240 to a tank. I usually put 13.8 gallons in so that's 17mpg.

The catless and the tune are the biggest things you can do to increase your mileage. The efficiency of the motor goes way up so if you keep your foot out of it, it gets awesome mileage

I only have an intake & catback....I am averaging 12 MPG.... so I am in the same boat as you. I maybe get 200 miles per tank. It sucks when my A4 was averaging 350. However my S4 doesnt get driven more than 50-60 miles a week. Occasionally I put 200 miles round trip to see my girlfriend, but for the most part it only sees 60 miles per week.

On my next oil change, I do plan on replacing fuel filter & spark plugs.... maybe that will help, if not, its good preventive maintanence

    - EDIT : where do I buy a fuel filter for our cars? Do they carry them at autozone or advanced auto?

I get right around 19MPG when doing all hi-way driving cruising at 80-90MPH. Just for curiosity sake I looked up the tank capacity of the B6 S4 and I found 16.6, I am thinking that my fuel gauge reads low because I have never put more then 16 gallons in the tank and there have been times I thought I was literally driving on fumes....I can make 300 miles easy....LOL.

I was just about the start this thread Kem. I'm in the exact same boat as you. New s4 b7 avant, new fuel filter, new tires. My worst was 179 miles / tank. My best was 220 miles. I usually calculate my milage every time I fill up.

AVG was 16, 17, 16 the last three times and I don't drive too crazy either. I have to go in for my 15k service soon and will let you know if they say anything. Also we have the avants that are heavier than the sedans, so most of these numbers should look a little better than ours.

I have been averaging between 23-24mpg highway and 19-20mpg on city only.
Tip - I sometimes skip gears usually 2nd to 4th, 5th, 6th. Hell you can even go from 1st to 4th without bogging it down.

I'm bone stock and at 69k and I get about 220 miles to a tank, I average about 16 mpg and it's mostly burbia driving. Definitely change plugs, filters, and maybe bump up tire pressures.

My B7 6MT averages about 230-250 of mostly city when I fill it at a quarter left (about 13 gallons). I average about 17-18 mpg (actually calculated, not the 18-19 indicated on my computer. I can get to 300 pretty easily on the highway at 70 mph, although I'm sure this is easier with an auto.

Also - just a note but "70 mph" on my speedometer is really only about 65.

Who cares about miles per tank. Miles per gallon is far more useful.

And yes, I am averaging 14mpg in 75% downtown Chicago/25% highway driving with a bit of a lead foot.

I usually get 260 a tank, average somewhere near 19 mpg with my mixed driving. I get on it some, but also skip shift and get in 6th quickly.

I bought the car 450 miles away from home, when driving it back I was getting 23.1 mpg. I haven't changed the plugs or filters yet, or done a tune. I hope that once I do that I'll get better gas mileage. I filled up today, went 259 miles on 14.67 gallons...

The elevation of Denver could have a lot to do with your better fuel economy. Less air=less fuel.......................at the cost of lower power.

Funny how when you fill up you put in 14.7 gallons, but when I fill up, I put in 13.8 gallons because my car is rpedicting I'll be out sooner than you. What makes that interesting is the gas light is really not a representation on how much is in the tank - zee crazzy germans have fooled zee amricans again. . Our tanks are 17.4 gallons so my gas light (and pretty much everyone else besides you) comes on with 3.6 gallons left, or a 20% reserve.

The elevation here absolutely plays a big role in mpg. My car is making 15-18% LESS power than if I lived at sea level, so I do get better mpg.

I probably drove 20 miles with the gas light on before I put in 14.67 gallons. According to the manual, the gas light pops on with 2.2 gallons left, but clearly that isn't the case, as I had about 2 gallons left and had gone 20 miles or so...

So after reading all of these posts I agree with the statement that miles per tank does not matter nearly as much as miles per gallon. Also, you need to realize that you are filling up when you still have a bunch of gas left in the tank. If you want to calculate miles per tank you should at least add the miles left to empty to the amount that you have already driven. This will at least give you a little bit more consistent figure to go off of.
