Anyone running a custom BT downpipe?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just trying to avoid spending the $400 on the BT downpipe and making one myself. Does anyone know anyone that has? Trying to gather things to make it. Thanks!

I have a 3" DP adapter and a V Band flange (and v-band) for a GT series turbo that you would need to build a BT 3" downpipe (assuming you change your mind about building one ). PM me if you're interested.

Having custom ones made are cheap. My mechanic charges $150 and you supply the parts. I have a custom 2.5" one on there now built by him, and will have a 3" custom one made later on.

Yeah I'm going custom. My brother works at a welding shop so that's a plus. I think I can use these two things for the flange right off the turbo.

Then just fab up a 3" stainless downpipe.

Oops, that's a t25/t28 bold pattern flange I would either use this

    http://www.034motorsport.com/fabrica...olt-p-185.html

    Or this

    http://www.034motorsport.com/fabrica...e-p-19119.html

I'll take pictures of how I'm going to make it when the time comes. Which one should I go with? The four or five bolt pattern? Or does it not matter.

Let me know if you need either of these two parts for your downpipe. I have a custom DP as well and these were spare parts from my downpipe build (I bought extra in case I wanted to build another).

I would be interested but isn't that first flange with a V band only for a t25 flanged turbo? On ATP they show that flange with the t25 exhaust housing

Oh that's true. I'm sorry, I missed that you were looking for a T3. The second flange is universal but the first is for a T25/T28.

Yes, it does matter. You need to be sure flanges match each others. For my downoipe, and asked him to simply cut the flange off of the old downpipe that would connect to the cat, and rewelded it onto my new dp as the flange (other end was a slip fit peice with exhaust clamp on my current exhaust). Just an example on how you can save on supply costs.

What exhaust housing do you have on your turbocharger?

And really, no need to buy expensive parts from 034 if they are just fabrication parts. I really do endorse 034 products that they sell (I have a couple), but fabrication peices can be purchased for cheap elsewhere. For example, I simply picked up a 6" long 2.5" flex joint, 2.5" stainless steel u-bend (304 16 gauge), and 2.5" exhaust clamp from ebay (can't recall how much I paid for all that, but it really wasn't much). That was all that was needed for them to make my downpipe.

Yeah I know they all have to match, what I meant to say was that I do not have the turbo yet so I'm not sure which flange to get the T3 5 bolt or T3 4 bolt. You said Ebay has good exhaust stuff? I'll have to check it out.

Exhaust parts are really all the same. It only matters when it comes to quality (304 SS) and thickness (16 gauge minimum) of parts such as piping. Flex joints are rather universal, along with flanges and clamps. No need to pay more when you don't need to. And don't pick up the flange you will need until you figure out what exhaust housing you will have. But generally, the t3 comes in the 4 bolt or v-band outlet while the T25 has the 5 bolt because of the wastegate port (T25 usually comes in internal wastegate applications).

Ahh alright, I'm def. going T3 flange but they have this flange as well as an option on the T3 housing

Do you plan on running a external WG? If so then you want to go with a 4 bolt flange.

The thing is T3 manifolds generally have an external wastegate port, while the T25 doesn't. The reason being, most T3 applications are external wasgetate while most t25 are internal. And I say generally, because that is the correct term to be used. But the 5 bolt is only used if you were to run an internal wastegate turbine housing (unless doing something like welding the wastegate shut and still using that housing). What turbo you plan on running?

You should be aware of the issues with the SPA manifold:
-it can be a hastle mounting the manifold (the trick is to walk the manifold down the threads of the studs while you tighten the nuts)
-it will be a tricky routing the oil drain line
-it really does not have runners, but a big open space (like a top mount logger, trying to be a tubular manifold)

I am going EWG, so it looks like 4 bolt it is. I'm going to be running the 2871r. I picked the SPA cause I heard it was made well and hasn't cracked on someone yet (from what i've read). I know the the installation is going to be a PITA haha. But I didn't realize it didn't have runners it should still be pretty good to use right?

i HIGHLY recommend going right to a vband. it makes removing the dp / turbo a breeze.

^You don't have a filter for your turbo? I know those are old pics, so I am asking.

PM sent. I just did not know if it would be violating AZ rules or not, because they are not paying vendors. If it doesn't, I don't mind posting the link to the website. I post many externals links, but those are for cheap replacement parts (ieautohausaz.com ).

Exactly. I have that same peice, but pretty sure I didn't pay $40 for it. What people also do is have it welded onto the exhaust housing. Like a ghetto rigged v-band exhaust housing, but is 100% effecient.

No, keep it. I love mine. Many will say its the best manifold for a daily driven car. I would have it ceramic coated before you install it. Mine has surface rust and oxidation all over it from road salt. I think it does have some coating on their from the factory, but it doesn't hold up to what MN/NY winters will do to it. I built my own downpipe when I went T3 cuz I had the time and welder at work. I'm running an open dump currently. In hindsight, I would buy the $400 downpipe made to fit the manifold and turbo with the routed in wastegate dump.

Not sure what the spacer/washers are for. I'm not running anything like that with mine. I found large flanged copper lock nuts from a local shop that fit all the stud wells.

I started with this outside the car. That's a Garrett 50-trim with a 5-bolt to v-band adaptor. Just eyed up the engine bay and did a few quick measurements when I made the downpipe. The dump tube was an Ebay $10 special. I ended up using the flange from it and bought a 90 and two 45's to make the tube drop before the axle then wrapped it in heat wrap.

    Tear down
