    S4 MMI Knob Problem

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just traded in my 2010 b8 a4 with navigation plus for a 2010 prestige s4 and noticed that the mmi knob in the s4 spins freely, where as in the a4 it clicks when you spin it. I was wondering if there is any way to enable the clicking because I prefer that to the freespinningsince it is less accurate when changing a setting or awing. Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hm.. thanks all for the check. I doubt audi will fix this under warranty, for I tried getting a visor clip fixed and they stated wear and tear, so i guess I am out on that aspect. As far as taking it apart to see why it is not clicking, and possibly fixing it, can anyone point me in the right direction as far as center console removal, or any ideas to make it click again? It is nice for scrolling through a bunch of songs, and scrolling along the navigation line, but everything else it is too sensitive. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I'm still not convinced that yours is broken... I have non nav, but I have used MMI 3G on an S4. I immediately noticed that the MMI knob on the S4 was much more loose than my MMI knob. On my car, the knob has a distinct click and it takes a fair amount of effort to rotate it, whereas the S4's knob felt like a mouse's scroll wheel with much less distinct clicks.
However, the S4's knob did have "click" points - it was not completely free spinning. If yours does not click at all, then you have a problem.

What I'm basically saying is the MMI 3G knob is much looser than a non-MMI knob...

I'd find another Audi dealer, I can't imagine why they would not fix this as a warranty repair......

Thanks all. I am going now to try and take the console apart and try to see what i can find. If I cannot come up with anything, I will surely try another dealer. Thanks!

Does it click at all? Or does it spin without any impedance?

In order to get to the wheel you will need to disassemble the entire MMI control panel. It's not just out in the open. I doubt it's something you can just fix and should be covered under warranty. Something breaking like a switch is not wear and tear and the dealer should fix it. As mentioned you should try another dealer or call AoA if the dealer wont take care of it.

No reason for this to be considered a part that is not meant to last the lifetime of the car so it should not be considered wear and tear. Warranty should cover it.

It just spins freely. Trust me i was used to it in my a4, but this just you could spin it really fast and it will take awhile to slow down, and it does not click at all. It still works though.

I ended up getting the whole mmi panel out and looked at the button, and it doesnt appear to be any broken pieces or missing pieces. I have been trying to find a part diagram of the mmi button and control panel, but cannot seem to find one. Anybody have one. I want to compare parts.

I will be taking this to another dealer, and hopefully they will say sure no problem! fingers crossed.

I believe the MMI control panel is one piece meaning there isn't a parts diagram for it; you have to buy the whole thing.

Are referring to non-MMI as well as MMI when you say "all MMI knobs click the same." (I know the difference between non-MMI and MMI, however, many people (including myself) interchange the terms.

I know for a fact non-MMI (dash controls) and MMI (below-shifter controls) have totally different rotation characteristics. I have used knobs on multiple non-MMI cars and multiple MMI cars and there is a clear difference between the two. The non-MMI knobs have a much stiffer and much "clickier" rotation while the MMI knobs rotate much more freely (however they do click).

The OP states that his knob spins freely without any resistance whatsoever, so I agree with you that his knob is broken.

Yes, I concur. The on dash have a more rubbery click and dont make any sound. The ones below the shifter actually click and have a more positive feel. Its good to see that we are all in agreeance that the OP has a broken knob.

I believe you have it backwards - my "on dash" (non-MMI) knob makes a very loud click and feels very mechanical. The below the shifter knob (MMI) feels much more rubbery and does not make any noise. - At least that is what I have seen...

My E60 535i's idrive had a free-spinning knob as well. I have grown to prefer the notched resistance in Audi's 3G MMI.

UPDATE - Took it to the dealer and they said they never saw anything like this before. They are just going to replace the entire MMI center console piece with the buttons and board under warranty. I doubt they took it apart. They probably just spun the wheel, then went to a s4 on the lot clicked that wheel, then looked and saw my car was under warranty and ordered the part. I will update when that comes in to verify that it clicks

Just got the car back from the dealership and they did indeed replace the entire mmi center piece under warranty. It clicks now!!! And the volume button is a lot tighter! Thanks AUDI!

They also fixed my drivers door sensor as well. It would only lock it about half of the time. They ended up replacing the entire sensor. I referenced a KB that another member here posted on another thread and that what lead them to replace the sensor and it works great! When I get a chance I will take apart the center console and look to see what piece is in the new one as opposed to what piece was missing from my old center console.
