burning oil - FT stage 3

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
my stage 3 build has about 500 miles on it and its burning oil from the passenger side only. i have a boost leak on the drivers side thats not exactly easy to get to and i cant even see it from the top of the motor but i can hear it leaking when i pressurize the system but it throws the car into limp mode when building up boost and backfires and pops. the passenger side makes a whirring sound when its cold especially, but with the windows up its always noticeable. is my turbo bad? there's no vapors coming from the oil cap so i dont think it can be the pcv system. any ideas? if i have to pull the motor again i will, mainly just to get rid of the shitty ft manifolds i stupidly bought for it.

the car wont build past about 14 psi cause thats when the CEL flashes and goes into limp mode so over boosting the turbos isnt/wasnt the issue.

    logs? codes?

pull the DP's and IC pipes to see if there is any oil...

500 miles into the build? boost leaks that you can't get to? sounds like whoever did the install should not be doing them.

start by fixing your boost leaks and pulling codes.

i did the install. the reason there are boost leaks i cant get to is because the manifolds aren't correctly orientated and i had to custom out everything to make the inlets fit right, and i wouldnt know if there were boost leaks or not until i had everything reinstalled and started. as far as codes go i get lean codes from both 02's, and also "no activity reported" codes, and a random/multi misfire code p0300. the tune is fine according to jfonze who did the tuning for me remotely.

    Could have pressure tested it.

Make sure you've got your N75 hooked up right. Can you take some logs and post? A large boost leak can sound just like a blown turbo or a turbo that is going out.

Unfortunately you'll need to address all known issues before you go further, otherwise you are just shooting in the dark and speculating.

hmmm. i pulled of an intercooler hose and its dry as can be. and then i pulled my catback and checked my downpipe. also zero oil in there. ive only noticed the oil in the exhaust since i pressurized it this morning with an intake pressure tester i built. based on that what else could be causing the oil to burn? valve cover gaskets? where is the n75 on the s4?

did you pull your oil cap off when you pressure tested?

you probably pushed oil past the seals in the turbos by keeping your oil cap on causing the smoke. next time pull the cap and block off your pancake valve port in the y pipe.

the only leak is coming from the passenger side inlet. the manifolds oriented the turbo wrong and the inlet didnt fit right. i custom made a braket for the inlet to seat it as best i can but it does have a small leak there. however, since it is an intake and not a boost leak, is it possible that could be making the car go into limp mode? its not much of a leak at all. with soapy water on it it just has small little bubbles coming out from it

    Soft limp.

Post all codes from VAG. It's fault related.

Chris, you need to download the Templates for the logs, just search "Mark ECUx". Its real easy, just copy and paste the requested data and headers.

Let us know how things go. You can also run without the N75 plugged in, which will limit boost to wastegate pressure. See if that changes anything.

with the n75 unplugged, the car did not go into limp mode. Boost stayed at ~8psi. zero engine codes even when going in limp mode and the n75 unplugged.

Not sure but is the log showing a dead EGT bank 1? if so wouldnt that cause this issue. Not sure though. Or have Josh code out the EGTs

Just got to start with the basics:

#1, Pressure test the car, extensively. When you get it pressurized, turn off the pressure and it should take a few seconds for things to depressurize.

    #2, GET A BOOST GAUGE!

#3, Have your tried running with your MAF unplugged?

#4, Just because there are not codes showing up, don't mean there are issues.

#5, temporarily code out EGT or make sure they are good

    #6, O2 sensors

    #7, I don't see overboost anywhere.

#8, check your MAF and TPS and MAP sensor connections; I had similar limp issues and it turned out to be my TPS connector, despite no codes ever showing up.

#9, bring it here to 034
