    all season tires?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
yes, i did a search and read through a few posts first...

basically i found a bubble in the sidewall of my drivers tire, probably from hitting a pothole... and the tire has been discontinued... its a dunlop 235/40/18 95w performance all season...

i am looking to put 4 new all seasons if they cant find the tire in the warehouse, ive read a few reviews and have it down to a few different choices, but my question is: are toyo proxes 4 any good? the dude at the tire shop recommended them, but i have no idea if he even knows anything, and i cant find any decent reviews....

    any thoughts?

I think Toyos tend to be overpriced for what they are. Fine tires but their "rarity" means you pay extra for tires that fail to differentiate themselves.

Only their RA1, R888, and R1R are worth mentioning, in my opinion. Plenty of other good tires out there. Tire Rack's objective tests are where you need to look, and not reading the hundreds of "I got tire X and it's awesome" posts.

I dunno, I've found Toyo's to be a very good value in comparison to other top line tires. Problem is they're hard to find especially since Tire Rack doesn't carry them. BTW, I hate the R888, they're a step down from the RA1 in every single aspect.

Agreed, the RA1 was a better tire. AFAIK they discontinued it.

Well, yes and no. Most the spec race classes hated the R888's and Toyo brought back the RA1, at least for another year. Not sure what's going to happen this coming year though. Luckily the Nitto NT-01 is the exact same tire with just a different tread pattern. Same rubber compound etc though. I confirmed that with the Toyo rep at the track a few seasons ago. The NT01's are cheaper than the RA1's too.

I have had only had experience with these, so I will only rate these:
Bridgestone RE960AS: Very quiet and good treadwear. Very good in the rain both with cornering and hydroplaning resistance but in the snow, they were useless
Goodyear Eagle F1 AS: There is absolutely nothing good about these. They are very square so they make the sidewall look huge, about 5lbs heavier than others in it's class, after about 10K, the start cupping and sound like mud tires on a jeep, and then they are worn by 20K but you will probably shoot yourself before then because of the humming. They are decent in the rain when they are new but once they reach about 50% treadlife, you should just stay home so you don't die. DO NOT BUY
Pirelli Pzero Nero All-Season: (not on the Audi, OEM on my dad's car). only 4000 miles into them and they seem perfect all around. Dead quiet, excellent traction, and the reviews on tirerack tell the rest of the story.

The 960AS is consistently a top-rated tire. That says a lot.

Too soft, from what I've heard. A soft sidewall is a total boner killer on a heavy car

I'm using the Eagle GT's all season and so far they seem to be holding up quite well. Probably have about 8-10k miles on them and I fully expect another 25k out of them the way they are wearing.

They are pretty good in dry, well I can slide all over the place with esp off if I want to. Wet, they are okay, not great but not terrible either, snow, no comment.

I understand the s4 is heavier than the a4 but I still like the tires so far.

I am seriously considering getting the Falken Azenis PT722 for winter use, but we don't get enough deep stuff here in my opinion to justify full on winters. At least I can hang on to these until I can decide what I want to do for a wheel setup.

I had the DWS on my 07 CTS and i absolutely loved them. Soft side wall aside they kicked ass in the rain and snow. Never got stuck! However the Nexen N7000 were a recommendation from Fort Lee Tire (that's where I get my rubbers). They said they have a harder sidewall and are Nexen's answer to the DWS. So far they are great in the rain. Looking to see what they are like in the snow. Just a couple more months.. :-X

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, Pirelli PZero Nero All Season, Bridgestone RE970AS, or the Continental DWS. All are solid choices.

If you're going to buy summers next year, then put a set of snows on for the winter. They make the car virtually unstoppable in snow.

I have the Conti DWS on my A4 and they have been great. They held up pretty well to a track day and they are beastly in the snow and rain. They are very reasonably priced so you have that going for you.

If you want all out performance I would say the Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus is a good bet but you pay up for them and I am not sure they are worth it over the DWS.

Yes dedicated snow tires would be best if you can afford a set of rims as well as the tires. And you have somewhere to keep them.

I have some crappy all seasons on the S4 now that came with it when I bought it over the summer. I did my best to kill them at the last track day, they were smoking when I came in to pit… Unfortunately they are still not worn enough to justify some fresh rubber.

they are on the softer side. But i am running a 245-35-19 and for a daily driver tire they are pretty nice. I ran Michelin PS2's before and i loved them, but i needed to get better milage for a daily driver tire so i opted for the DWS. They have a softer turn in, but they handle reasonable (for an A/S), great in the wet, nice and quiet on the highway and they are light.

I am keeping a set of Michelin Pilot Sport cup's on my 18's for track use and just using the DWS for my daily. works just right for a daily driver tire, i don't drive hard enough on the street everyday to nessitate the PS2 or PSS on my daily anymore. I guess i am just getting old.

There's no PS2 around anymore, just NOS sizes that are variable. The new super sport are out in only a few sizes and can be had at lower prices than typical since michelin does not have all sizes yet.

I have the Pilot Sport A/S on the S6 during the winter, they handle well in the rain and snow, as well as on dry pavement. The tread has lasted through 2 seasons and then some, and they'll last another winter. I'll replace them due to age before I'll have to due to wear.
