Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was on the road last night doing about 75-80 and lightly hit the brakes and I heard a very loud noise from the brakes.. then I tries doing it again and I couldnt reproduce the sound... it must be when the brakes are cold it happens. also when I pull out of my driveway(again when the brakes are cold) and lightly hit the brakes(under 3mph) it hums...... any idea's of what this could be?

you are probably hitting the rivets on the pads! you will see lines in the rotors.

When did you last replace the pads? Mine do the same thing after high speed stops (150+) they get hot spots on the rotor

Pads are always going to be noisier when they're outside their "optimal" operating range.

I had them replaced brand new with my purchase of the car on September 8, 2010 so exactly a year on the pads and they have lots of meat on them.
EDIT:Pads in front and back and rotors upfront.

Take the pads out and take a look at them. If they are the stock pads the rivets will show about half way through their life. You think that the pads have a lot of meat on them, but when you take them out, you will see the rivets , which are supposed to wear softer then the rotors, but they don't.

Doesn't matter how many miles as much as it does driving condition/style. Like Raudi said, remove the pads and inspect. It's one way to verify if your issue is the pins, if not at least you ruled them out.

Are the rivets on the front and back pads? or just the front?

I have this same exact problem. Check this video...is it the same sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jteBBxHhO7k

When I've inquired with the dealer, they (of course) couldn't recreate the problem. I have Stoptech pads on mine so I personally dont think its a product of the stock pads as much as something with the rotors. My rotors are still the originals but do no require replacement yet.

I've had it happen the same as you too....when I've been on the freeway traveling 75-80 and I press on the brake and then even when Im exiting a parking structure and just rolling to a stop and very lightly touching the brake it'll sometimes happen.

Tony, was it wet outside either of these instances? Driveway thing could have been a light surface rust situation. Highway thing could have been a small pad deposit on the rotor.
