Iphone 4s camera quality thoughts?

I stopped buying small compact digital cameras because cell phones have gotten better over the years

Even though the camera quality has gotten WAY better over time, a cell phone camera cannot replace a quality digital SLR. Night photos suck because the flash (if so equipped) isn't powerfully enough to make any real difference if the distance is over 5 feet.

Obviously it's no DSLR but it seems pretty comparable to most P&S's that are on the market these days.

Exactly. Maybe as good as a $100 P&S camera, but not as good as a $200-300 camera with a decent lens and sensor (the iPhone sensor is only half the size of a typical P&S sensor. (And, yes, night-and-day difference to an SLR with a good lens.)

No way, the key to taking good pictures is all in the lens. The lenses on phone cameras are simply too small to effectively replace a decent P&S camera. Not to mention you have zero optical zoom on a phone and the flash sucks ass. My EVO takes decent pictures in good light where zero zoom is needed, but no way in hell can it replace my Canon SD780IS that is the size of a deck of cards.

No way, the key to taking good pictures is all in the lens.

I have to disagree, the key to taking good pictures is the person taking the pictures. TBH I haven't used a P&S in years, I was just comparing it to other shots I see on AZ and it seemed comparable. If I'm specifically going out to take photos I take the DSLR, if I just need a spontaneous shot my iPhone 4 works just fine.
