A couple of questions about the Ultra Sport before I buy

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I'm looking at a 2005 Ultra Sport. The price is right on according to KBB, but I have a few questions before I pull the trigger:

    1) The steering wheel has two buttons that can be used to shift the gears in the tiptronic. How well do these work? Is there a long lag after you press them, or are they mostly instantaneous shifts?

    2) The car has the shark fin antenna and the bracket for the Sirius Satellite radio tuner, but no tuner. I assume this means that it's "Sirius Ready". Do I just buy a Sirius tuner and plug it in, activate with Sirius, and go? Or is it more work than that?

    Thanks!

tips are nice if you live in a high traffic area or someplace that has continuous construction. When I drove a b6 3.0 with tip the buttons worked well and seemed quick enough.

I'm driving my dad's 3.0 while mine is in the shop, and the tip buttons on the wheel work just fine. I prefer it to the shifter.

I would give Sirius a call and ask them about it, or any local/trusted electronics shop.

It's a Quattro. But why would you care whether I drive a tip or a manual? I currently own two tiptronic A4's, thankyouverymuch!

Thanks everyone else who gave intelligent responses.

NOTHING wrong with a tiptronic, they are damn good transmissions. Manual owners are just a bunch of haters.

I prefer the shifter over the steering wheel buttons, until I get my hands on a flat bottom RS6 wheel with paddles.

Tiptronics are fine, and preferred in urban environments.

you can also recode the tranny so that it will not out guess your choice and shift up/down on you. do a search for tip recode

Excellent suggestion, onlyaudis! Something I can put VCDS(VAG-COM) to work on.

The shift lag is insignificant. However, I never liked the buttons and ended up getting a steering wheel with paddle shifters from a MkI TT. I believe the C5 RS6 wheel is the same. I love the paddle shifters.

That being said, if I were you I'd drive a Tiptronic car before buying one. Even if you go to a used lot and find a garden variety AWD A4. At least you'll know what to expect. While it's not a manual transmission by any means, it gives you a lot more control over the gear changes and can be driven just as hard as a manual.

Regarding Sirius, the car is pre-wired. You'll have to get the tuner and stuff it in the trunk.

Having driven a car with the buttons on the wheel, I'm not real impressed....too much lag, but no more than shifting "manually" w/the shifter.

Chances are it is "sirius ready", but find the wiring to be certain. BTW- tuners are $30 @ ECS.

Um, I have. I own two of them. They're both in my signature.

Thanks for the suggestion on the paddle shifters. I agree, they are ideal instead of buttons.

Oh my, you mean they actually sold B6's with the antenna and bracket but without the wiring harness back in the trunk? Hopefully someone with a Sirius tuner will see this and be kind enough to post a pic as to what the wiring harness looks like.

You might already have the tuner installed. Did you check above the covered void above the cubby on the left side of the trunk? You can reach your hand back there and feel if the tuner is there, you will feel the wires coming out of it.

    The wires look like this:

Here is a picture I took when I removed the cubby to access the tuner. As you can see, it is actually above the drawer-like void.

I was going to post that minus the pics. My 2004 USP came with a Sirius Box in the trunk, but its not activated. I believe they all came with at least the wiring harness in the back. If your stereo has the SAT button you probably have it. its hard to know for sure, but you can VAG the car, if the owner will let you, and it should at least connect to the Sat module if its there...

Thanks Tahoe & Charles! I have not had a chance to look at the car in person yet. That comes on Saturday. I'll ask the owner if the radio has the Sat button.

No problem. I think all a4s past 2004 had the SAT button, but definitely ask. GL with the inspection. I love my USP! Also what color? These things are important you know!
