    Cool Interesting VAG find

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I was doing some VAG coding on my new 2011 Q7 S-Line 3.0T Prestige. I was trying to do the same things that I did on my S4, but there are not many long code helpers for the Q7, so it was more difficult to find things. Anyways, I activated the lap timer and oil temp, but to my surprise I got something extra. A boost gauge. I have never seen this on the S4. Now there is one major problem, it does not actually give me a boost reading. I am thinking there has got to be something in the VAG coding that will make it work, but as of right now I cannot find it. I just thought this was interesting since the S4 and Q7 have the exact same engine. Maybe someone can figure out how to get this to work on the S4.

These are the only ones I have right now. A friend borrowed my SLR camera, so I have not got a chance to take any good pics.

It is such a great SUV. I have the air suspension on it and it rides so smooth. I have been driving it for a few days now over the S4. I love the S4, but it is just not comfortable compared to the Q7. I would highly recommend you get one. You will not regret it. PM me if you have any specific questions about it in general, or even compared to the S4.

I saw this on a test drive of the new TTRS and it DID work. I'd love to have this for the S4 DIS.

Amazing find. The RS6 and TT RS have that from the factory. Let's get DavidB8 over here and figure it out for us.

+1001...I would love this as well. David has a A4 with the 2.0. Not sure if this coding change would be as easy for him to track down because it might be specific to engine. We need to get the Q7 with the boost gauge showing and the S4 together and compare VAGCOM settings to track it down.

It was weird because I did not see anything about it in the long code helper in the Q7. It just showed up after I turned on the lap timer. Obviously this was under the Instruments on the VAGCOM.

My exact thought....if it doesn't appear when you activate your lap timer than it probably never will. Something similar to the oil temp being activated. For instance, 2008-09 B8's can activate the lap timer but the oil temp. does not appear.

My thoughts too, likely newer version of the MMI software. Also, understand that this is a min/max guage, it won't actually show boost, so it's pretty useless to be honest (sadly). Considering the tune changes what the max target value is, unless there is further way to change that scale using VCDS, it won't mean a lot.

One way to find out is wait for someone with a 2012 S4 and have them activate lap timer. If it shows up for them, then it will mean we won't be able to get it.

Don't know if that is necessarily true. It could be activated somewhere else, or perhaps in the hidden menu, but will only display when the lap timer/oil temp gauge is turned on and if activated.

You could be right but it's hard to say until it's discovered. My thought process was based on how the oil temp gauge works, since you can't (or don't have to) activate it separately within the Lap Timer screen.

The output to MMI may be controlled within the ECU. On Bosch ECU's you can enable items that are not there. IE, you can enable oil temp on a US MK6 GTI thought modification to the ECU even though the sensor doesn't exist.... it will just read 0. The same MMI may be on two different vehicles (ie, TTRS with Bosch ME9 ECU and S4 with Conti Simos 8 ECU). So coding may not even exist in the ECU to tell the MMI what to display.

Maybe some (cough, APR, cough) could reprogram the ECU to add that information to the MMI display?

When the lap timer was activated....

    [17 - Instruments]
    [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 1 Bit 3 change from 0 to 1
Or Check the box for "Lap Timer active" if available.

This is what I'm hoping for. It would be awesome for them to tie it into the log parameters and see it all live on the screen. Maybe eliminate the need for a laptop altogether??

I'm no programmer but i'm nearly sure anything is possible.

*Heck they even put the game 'snake' on the DIS
Sadly the B8 isn't on the compatible car list...but maybe if there is enough interest...
    http://zzottel.de/index.php/en/car/fis-control

*Edit: Just contacted the maker, but sadly he isn't familiar with the B8.
I don't have any information about how to utilize the DIS-screen of the
B8. So I think I can't be of any help at the moment.

    Regards, Stefan
Maybe somebody that knows more can help him out?
This would be a hardware tool (intergrated) i would spend my money on.

So I tried enabling the boost gauge, but to no avail. While doing so I found this in VCDS. Bit 3 and 4 says "Pressure Display: PSI". Alternately, I can select pressure in bars.

Anybody know what this pressure is about? Where does it show up? (neither choice would give me the boost gauge in the lap timer)

I'm not ready to let this thread die.

I don't think anyone has forwarded this thread to David on the B8 A4 forum. I'm going to forward the thread to him and see if he has any ideas or suggestions of who to turn to next.

I will report back if I hear anything.

Sounds like a good idea. I think we may be able to get it to work. The boost info has to be there because you can monitor it through VAG.

Anybody know what this pressure is about? Where does it show up? (neither choice would give me the boost gauge in the lap timer)

    It refers to tire pressure.

Well I did see it when it was first posted but you guys seemed to be off on trying to work it work it out as an S4 thing so I figured I'd leave you to it.

To start tracking this down it would be easiest to work with the Q7 coding. So I need the long coding and an adaptation scan of one with the boost on it. If we can get that I can start looking for it. I'm guessing no one here has a TTRS or an RS6 to use as comparison. The fact that the TTRS had it should have been an indication that it wasn't specific to the engine.

Rarely do they code things that are specific to an engine or chassis. They seem to prefer one managed codebase, then they can enable/disable things that are not present or supported on the varying models. Case in point, you can enable the ambient lighting, which is a "feature" present on the higher end models, that the code is present on all MMI 3G cars, you just have to turn it on.

Right. It seems like all the configurable bits are part of one big registry schema.

As another option...if anyone has a Q7 with the boost gauge turned on I would be more than happy to drive it all the way up to David so he can work this out quickly. Just let me know. I will also pay for gas/diesel.

Thank you for your help David! Let's get him what he needs!!!
