It acts like it chokes out, or ran out of gas. We swapped in a fuel pump that we knew was working, same thing. Very perplexed.
Thanks for the responses so far.
About the only thing failing that does NOT (why? ...I dunno) throw a code, is the fuel pump...doesn't sound like typical symptoms of a failed pump, but not out of the question. Less likely would be a clogged fuel filter ...extremely rare and unlikely on these cars, unless you got a tank of REALLY contaminated (sediment) gas.
Mechanic needs to have a fuel pressure gauge installed in-line during the failure...this would determine if it's really starved for gas or being "shut down" from another source.
Just guessing, but if not the pump, a bad fuel pump relay cutting power...probably wouldn't throw a code by itself, but being starved for gas repeatedly should at least throw a "lean condition" code.
The symptoms sound more like a throttle body, MAF or other problem (immobilizer...not likely)that "should" throw a code ...and a CEL.
Hard to say without being there.
