Anyone know if there is a setting to change the location of the gear indicator.
Bottom left on the display just doesnt work for me...cant see it behind the steering
wheel...not the biggest problem but seems like a design flaw if it cant be changed
    Thanks

With the VAGCOM mod, I see the DSG gear selection display in the bottom center.

I agree with A5RIZ... I wish mine was in top left corner or top center. Problem is when going around a turn really fast you can't see what gear your in and while exiting curve you shift up it would be nice to know the gear instead of trying to remember it.... This also applies before you enter the curve and you want to shift down.
By the way A5RIZ, this was a problem in the beginning, but after a while, I learned to judge which gear I was in by memory and RPM...
When I asked this question on a previous thread, people responded by saying there was no way to change location of gear indicator via VAG-Com...

Just look at the tach. RPM is all that matters, not gear choice.

+1 ... BUT have you noticed that depending on the turn, the steering wheel blocks the RPM guage.
Next S4 should have the RPM guage right in the middle. That would be cool...

...what would be really cool imo is if they got rid of the analog speedo, and used the room to add an oil temp guage and a bigger gear indication. That speedo is huge and pretty much useless.

No matter where the tachometer is positioned, the steering wheel can block it, depending on the sharpness of the turn. This has been the case since cars first had tachs, and yet drivers have always been able to shift. Even before cars had rev limiters. Listen to the engine note, and you should have a good idea of the revs, and when you should shift.

Oh yes, I have a 6MT with no gear indicator on the dash. And I don't look at the shifter all the time to see what gear I'm in, either.

Exactly. Engine/exhaust note is all you need to know when to shift, dsg or 6mt.

Agreed in general but with the quiet stock exhaust and the kickin stereo it can be hard to hear anything at all.

If you're driving hard, turn down the tunes and focus ...

Uhh, I better admit that my S4 has not yet arrived and I'm still driving my B6 A4 (with 6MT). I hadn't noticed a gear indicator on my S4 test drive, but I wasn't looking for one, either. If there really is one, then it's my bad on that ... but I still don't need one.

Yeah because ** disregarding the DSG vs 6MT argument for a minute ** when you shift from third to fourth, back to third, up to fourth and fifth, down back to third and so on, you remember exactly what your last shift was, where the stick is now, and your muscles are preprogrammed to grab it and move it where it needs to go. It's the culmination of all the data you're processing: the feel of the pedal, the sound of the engine, etc. You don't think about the gear number but you know it in the back of your head.

When you're flipping paddles back and forth for a while, you forget what gear you're in. In my 6MT R32 I look at a corner and it's almost like my arm decides, "go get that stick and move it to third gear". There is no such muscle memory on a DSG. So any greater visual stimuli is a good idea, in my book. As for myself, I want a gigantic 3 or 4 or whatever that takes up the entire DIS. I mean I want a straight up rally display. And if you want to toss a digital tach bar right above it, all the better. As the platform gets older I hope there will be more aftermarket options to do things like this.

More feedback is my main reason for wanting an aftermarket exhaust too. A cool exhaust note on the outside is nice but I want it for the noise inside.

    ^^^ agreed.

Even more importantly for those who've tracked their DSG, it will refuse a downshift into 2nd until close to 3000 rpm for me (which puts me into my turn-in). I would like to know it has refused the downshift, on a nice big display, before I get back on the gas. This has tripped me up a few times.

Doesn't the 6MT have some sort of economy mode which makes a big shift indicator on the top of the DIS? I forget if I am imagining this, but if it exists, maybe it can be enabled for DSG....?

When the lap timer feature is turned (which also displays the oil temp) there is a bunch of room in the DIS that is not being used. That would be a cool place to put the DSG gear number.

Sounds like a nice opportunity for APR (or someone else)!

I haven't found one yet on mine. All it does provide is a small display bottom left of the current gear, and if necessary a suggestion for a gear change for economical driving, like this:

It's actually not "unused" it's where the lap times go if you actually use the lap timer.

OK, in the same place as our DSG. Oh well.

Anyway I'd much rather have reprogrammed DSG software that makes the DSG do what you tell it to do in M mode. Hmmm gonna resurrect that old thread again so the vendors notice.
