    need turbo options input

well im currently building a motor. its an 06a block with ie rods and stock cr and bore je pistons and a stock aeb head. after the motor is done id like to start getting parts for a bt build. only problem is i dont have a turbo in mind to start buying parts for. my goals are over 300awhp yet i would like to tune it pretty conservative as not to push anything hard. i was originally planning on a 2871r, but my im leaving my options open. id be all for doing one of the efr's, but dont know which one the 6258 or 6758 or if there are even good tunes for them yet. i was planning on doing a uni 630 tune, but again im leaving my options open. ill pose these specific questions: (car is 01 tqm)
    1. which turbo should i go with based on the above info?
    2. which tune to be paired with said turbo? (i am aware of maestro but id side towards a standard tune)
    3. should i go mafless? if so what are the benefits besides shorter intake?

A place between here and there

You should replace the stock exhaust valves on the AEB cylinder head with solid steel ones.

    1. It's really up to you. There are a lot of turbo options to consider.
    2. Unitronics OTS, Eurodyne OTS, Eurodyne suite, or custom are your only good options to consider.
    3. Going MAFless is up to you. Other that deleting having to plumb an intake and having the MAF possibly fail, there are no real benefits. It is actually is less effecient when it comes to load calculations (during part throttle), when not having a MAF.
I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

I don't know, how long is a piece of string? How old is a Snake? There's waaaaay to many variables that you haven't identified. Total cost? who's building it? How much money you have to do it? How much time do you have to do it? How much downtime can your car have for this project? Is it your daily driver? Do you depend on it to get to work and back?

And those are just the variables surrounding parts and acquisition. Just to be clear, I'm not ragging on you specifically, but I've just seen this thread topic way to many times lately. Guys who are no where close to pulling the trigger asking for a complete list of what they need to make XXX WHP, experienced forum members taking time out of their days (and yes, I always assume that when people take the time to help me that their time is money) and then going in a completely different direction the next week or abandoning it altogether.

Search, search and more search. There are more than enough threads here to answer 99% or your questions. Now, I'll give you some good advice, If you do have a question, best to pose it in respect to research that you've already done, and make it specific. i.e. I've gone over most of the threads I can find on XXX issue and I've found YYY. However, I still can't figure out ZZZ. At least this way people see that you've done the leg work and have something worth asking about because there isn't a firm answer. Rather than just getting things spelled out for you in one thread. Hope this helps.

While saying search has an entertaining value, i'll go ahead and answer this.

The gt2871R will put you above 300 WHP along as it has supporting mods ie. intercooler, exhaust (DP) ect.

As long as you have an AEB head with pistons and rods you will be fine running 25+psi on a good tune. Just make sure the surge spike isn't too large or you'll be seeing problems. For the tune I'd go unitronics as they have a strongly supported tune for the 71r. I do the tuning my self with piggyback systems. However, this isn't for everyone. You have to know what your doing; thought I mention this because I have seen 6 different turbos in the A4 (Mind you also 3 engines) and never had to buy new tuning software.

Other options to the GT2871r would be the HTA 68, 71 and 73 versions of the GT28. Either of the EFR's should give you the power you want for the street.

This is another delemma of mine. Im not sure if its worth it to put exhaust valves in. My reaserch indicates plenty of guys making more than 300whp on a stock aeb head, but after buying my motor and seeing the busted valves in there its really got me thinking it could be a good investment. see below for more on this.

I understand there are many variables i didnt include. Im just in the thinking stages right now. To answer your questions: yes money is a factor. If it wasn't id bee asking you which lamborghini to buy, not how to make my audi faster. Is it much of a factor? Well not really. I make decent money and this is a long term build. I have bought an extra motor to build. My car is running just fine now. However, the other motor isnt yet. Downtime isnt a huge factor, but id like to limit it. Id like to start buying parts soon, with a goal to have them installed by spring. The entire point of me starting this thread is to determine which turbo to go with in order to start purchasing parts for it. Without knowing which route id like to take, it would be like taking an buying wood to build a house without land to put it on. And yes it is a daily driver, but i have another vehicle, the one ton plow truck. It get horrible gas mileage and that is one reason id like to limit audi downtime. My commute to work is about five miles each way and same goes for school.

Thats what im thinking. Uni seems the way to go. Im sure maestro would work good for me as it seems like the kind of thing id like, but id rather just buy something that works outright and not have to tweak it. Again, im not looking to squeeze every single available horsepower out of a 2871r, im just looking for a nice conservative route to get over 300whp. Im really looking into the efr's, but there just isnt enough info out there right now, or at least that ive come across. it seems like the efr's spool characteristics are pretty great though.

Ill look into the hta's at work tonight. Am i missing any info on the efr's? i work twelve hour night shifts so i got a lot of time to waste on the computer and i just havent found enough info on them to decide its the route i want. However i did notice on rai's website that they offer a uni efr tune with the purchase of an efr. is this different from uni's 630 file?

Well there isn't that much info because people generally go with the Garrett turbos which have a lot more available information. However, how do you think information is aquired? People have to run products that others would not. I've previously ran a 71 in the past at 25psi. I was very happy with the spool timing and power. I have also ran the gt2871R for a week (Friend totaled his car and let me use it for waterfest - tuned it on the ride up). Overall I would go with the GT28 due to spooling characteristics. Although, for overall power the 71 is a winner.
