I know there's a lot of cold start up timing chain threads out there. This isn't one of them. I'm asking for opinions on what you guys think this sound is a symptom of before I have my independent shop tackle it. I have a 3rd party extended warranty but still need to check on exactly what engine components are covered(guides, adjusters, etc).
Relevant Information:
-2005.5 MT S4 w/ 74k mi
-Oil Change done 500 mi ago. Motul 300v. Engine smoother but no change in ticking at warm idle. Was hoping it would help.
-Burns 1qt oil every 2.5k mi
-Coils/plugs changed 1k mi ago
-Engine runs well. No codes at all (I have a VAG-COM cable)
-Power feels on point
Symptoms:
At start up I have the typical chain/guide noise for .25-.5 sec. Not an issue. Engine idles with no ticking/slapping when the engine is cold. When the coolant temp gauge approaches normal operating temp the ticking/slapping sound starts. Can only be heard from at idle with windows down......and again only when warmed up.

Your input is appreciated. Thanks fellas.

I took the car to Maplewood Audi in the Twin Cities area a week ago and one of the mechanics recognized the noise and said he was 99.9% sure it was a broken timing chain adjuster. So even though I'm covered under a Zurich extended warranty I had to authorize the removal and tear down of my engine. After completing the tear down they confirmed I did indeed have a broken timing chain adjuster. An inspector from Zurich came out and looked at the car to make sure it didn't have abnormal oil sludge buildup, a tuned ecu, supercharger, etc. (They don't like any aftermarket additions but they have to prove the additions caused the problem). Luckily the PO had gotten every service done on time and at Maplewood. He confirmed the broken adjuster but wanted the engine torn down further. This made me a little nervous. 2 days passed and I literally got a call 30 minutes ago from my service adviser telling me Zurich had approved the replacement of ALL guides, adjusters and timing chains! So, I'm a very happy man right now. Can't wait to get my ride back in a week. The B8 A4 loaner is a nice car but its definitely not as fun to drive.
I hope this gives some insight to people wondering about aftermarket warranties and the process involved in getting a large claim processed. I would have to recommend Zurich to anyone looking at 3rd party warranties after this experience with them. They're paying a $7K+ bill on a car with less than 500 miles left on the contract.
