    Vag-com 409.1 vs 1.1

I understand that it is frowned upon to talk about the 409.1.

But i just need a quick and simple answer. What is the difference between the two softwares and why are all the 3'd party cables advertising "409.1 working!!!!" When 1.1 is the latest version available from ross tech.

Im getting payed in 25 minutes from posting, and i would like to choose what i spend my money on so i can get shipping going before the weekend.

I searched, and just read a bunch of jibber jabber that didnt really answer my question.

    *noob edit*
I am under the impression that i am going to be able to do the following mods with an ebay cable and the 100% free version of ross-techs software. (unless cable is broken, but thats whoever makes its fault)
    1). Seat belt chime mod
2). Windows and 1 click unlock from remote
    3). fogs on with drl.

    Thanks guys.

This reply is off the cuff with no research so take it for what you paid for it. The 409.1 is the older discontinued version of the free software. Not sure the powers that be exactly frown on talking about that version but for some reason they sure do frown on posting places the freeware can still be downloaded. The 1.1 version you've found is probably the VCDS-Lite which is Ross Tech's current free version and will run with Windows 7. I think the older version will not. I have no suggestions on what cable to get.

AFAIK, 409.1 is more tricky to setup but allows you to pull and clear codes which the newer versions do not unless you have an authentic cable.

OP, keep us updated. I'm interested in this, as I don't have a cable, and consider myself a COMPLETE vag-com noob. Thanks.

Try to get 409.1 working first! See if you can scan/clear codes as thats why most people haven't upgraded....

I remember quite a while ago getting 409.1 and a China cable going on a Windows Vista computer. The biggest problem was drivers in Windows for the cable. It's been a few years ago and I honestly can't remember how I got it going but I think it was with a mini-CD that came with it. Once I got past the driver issue the software was pretty straight forward just pay attention to com ports. When switching to a Windows 7 computer the drivers were built in but I didn't try 409.1.

Alright, i just wanted to know if there was any major difference between the softwares. Seeing as there is no legal way to get 409.1 other than if it comes with a cable.

It's just the numbering convention Ross-Tech has used. Current VCDS version is 11.11.2; 409.1 is one of their older versions.

The B7 model release used a modified CAN-bus so some modules can now only be accessed with the later versions of the VCDS software. This change was made by Audi and Ross-Tech has updated their software to suit. I have a Ross-Tech cable and have zero issues accessing module for B5, B6, B7 & B8 model vehicles - I have helped out a number of folks in the Vancouver area with this. If you have 3rd party cables with the older 409.1 software limitations exist.

I highly recommend buying the Ross-Tech cable - it's worth the extra cost in my opinion because things work and Uwe and team do answer the couple of questions I have raised i.e. they support their product well. My 2c worth.
