    Question RPMs jumping (please help)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    2001.5 audi S4 quattro (6-spd manual)

i recently have been having a problem with my rpms jumping. i dont know if its my clutch slipping or not.

    (heres my senerio)
when i am driving in 3rd gear and go to punch it, my RPMs will jump from when i get to about 3200 and jump to 5000 by the time i let off the pedal. it feels almost like my transmission thinks i moved to netural when im still in gear (theres no power to the wheels but engine keeps going). i dont notice this in 1st or 2nd because i dont punch it in low gears because of this problem. after about a week of driving with this problem, my check engine light came on. i took it into an audi dealership to get it scanned and they came up with 2 faults, p0322 and p1539. one is the crankcase refference sensor and the other is the clutch switch. audi advised me to change the crank sensor first. the weird thing was, that when i left the dealership after they cleared the codes, the RPM problem i was having wasnt happening anymore. i could punch it as hard as i wanted. pedal to the medal, any gear.

but 3 days ago the problem happened again (about 1 week after the dealership looked at it and cleared the codes). i bought the crankase sensor, replaced it, and checked my system for faults. the problem still agsists. i dont know what this could be.(check engine light still hasent came back on). i called audi and told them i was experincing the same problem. they said come in and that they will check it again ( for another $100 of course). i told them that i would wait for the check engine light and bring it in then.

has anyone experienced anything like this? could it be the crankcase sensor or clutch switch? the weird thing was that i drove it for a week, after the dealership, like a champ.

You have a manual tranny right? If your engine is actually revving up and you aren't speeding up then your clutch is slipping. Or your doing a burnout lol. Is your car chipped?

RPM's can't just jump if the car is in gear under load. Clutch is probably toast, smell anything funny?

Yea it's your clutch. I've had the same thing happen to me. One test you can do (I heard) is try to make your clutch slip, for example, down the highway in 5th gear. Just drive along normal, give the clutch a quick push on then off and see if it catches or if it slips and the RPM's climb up.

another vote for a toasted clutch here.

this is an excuse to get a beefier clutch. Look into Southbend, Clutchmasters, or Vast. And for Christ sake, find a good indy shop so you aren't getting raped by a dealer.

yeah i have a 6spd manual, and its chipped also. i really dont think its my clutch slipping, i cant smell anything. it was happening, then was perfect for a week after the dealer, and now its doing it again. my mind is just stuck on something eletrical. but i could be wrong. i tested it on a backroad and when it happened, i stoped, got out the car, popped the hood, and was smelling for the clutch... no clutch smell

does the motor rev up or just the tech move? There is no way that can rev your engine in gear with out you moving faster or your clutch slipping.

Check your slave cylinder to make sure it's not leaking.

ok ill do that this weekend. could that be the issue? when i was driving today i stoped at and auto parts just to see if they could find any faults or anything. they said system was good. but when i left the store, my car was back to normal. if my clutch was slipping, would it be able to slip for a few days then not for a few days?

Its either your tach freaking out or a slipping clutch. Has it ever happened while cruising? ie not accelerating? Its pretty easy to tell if it the clutch youll hear your motor rev up, go out and do some highway pulls in 5th gear i guarantee youll get it to slip.

ill try the highway pulls. maybe tomorrow but most definatly saturday. getting windows tinted on saturday and gptta drive on the freeway. hopefully its the clutch but hopefully not. cause if i end up pulling the trany im going to get exaust sense ill be under the car anyways. i have stock exaust so it will be nice to get it all done but bad cause ill have to spend a lot more than i need to.

I had a shop do the clutch on my Eclipse when I was still living in the barracks and he also did the diagnostic, turns out it was my slave cylinder leaking that caused the slip. Anyway, when I first started it and the first like 20 miles or so it would grab fine. After it warmed up, if I hit the gas too hard the rpm's would spike. That's why I suggest you checking the slave cylinder to make sure it's not leaking. If it's seeping oil onto your friction plate, it's only a matter of time before you're not going anywhere.
