Click here for all applicable automatic transmission fluids.
Although it's a bit pricey, I would recommend OEM.

OEM ATF. I am a big Amsoil fan, and would have more than likely tried their ATF though if I had an automatic (I have a maunal transmission and use their manual tranny fluid along 75w90 gear oil for the rear diff). The one they have says that it is compatable for G-052-162-A1, but it seems you are supposed to use G-052-162-A2. Not sure of the A1 to A2 is a revision in the forumula or what. But it's people with manual transmissions usually try out different brands. Also, there are service intervals with it comes to automatic transmission fluid.

    96-97 (all): 45k intervals
    98: 25k intervals for 1.8t/37.5k intervals for 2.8
    99: 20k intervals on 1.8t/22.5k intervals for 2.8
    00: 20k intervals for 1.8t/32k intervals for 2.8
01: every 2 years regardless of mileage

I use/recommend Valvoline MaxLife Dex Merc. I'm running it in a 2.8 A4 and a 3.0 A4, and a 1.8T Passat. I had to have my Daughter's 1.8T Jetta's 5-speed auto rebuilt because of worn clutches (always filled previously with VW ATF), and the transmission shop our company uses, Riverside Transmission, filled with MaxLife without me asking for it. He told me that with a 3-year warranty to consider, he wasn't going to take a chance with the fluid he uses. But don't expect snappy, grabby shifts. I had some first-gear shudder on my 2.8 using factory fluid, after two MaxLife changes it is smooth every shift.
