Key Fob Battery replacement

Remove the silver key from the fob, grab the black part underneath the silver key and press the silver button and the black button and pull out to remove the battery carrier. Pretty straightforward from there.

I would have everything ready and try and do the swap fairly quickly to reduce the chance of it forgetting anything.

No. How would it? There are no metal contacts on the outside of the fob.

Ever seen a cordless toothbrush? Same thing, you set it on the charger, no metal in contact.

real easy to do and you can get the battery for $5 at Radioshack,just make sure you get the right one.

Dunno... I haven't RTFM'd on that section. I only mentioned it cause my mom's TL does that so I made an assumption.

It's called eco-concrete. It's my desktop, weighs 400lbs. :) got it at Room and Board, however I don't think they sell this material anymore. Not sure why

Well I'd venture to guess they don't because this CR2032 that is in my 2011 S4 key is not rechargable (at least from the factory). That's not conculsive but I seriously doubt there is any charging considering all the cost cutting measures Audi has done to the S4. IMO

I was sure it charges...my salesperson told me to swap the fob once in awhile to make sure they both are charged. I will ask when I go in for service, should be soon.

Very funny guys. I didn't want the car to default to all my wife's settings which are stored on the second fob.
Therefore, I took out her battery until I could buy replacements.

Granted, I could have used the door preset buttons, but eff that - I drive the car 99% of the time.

I had nothing to lose, so I did the recharging test and so far the replace battery error has gone away. I still went to to the store to buy a battery replacement just in case. I let you know what happens next.

My Dealer told me the dash slot DOES recharge the key fob when I bought the car. I just got the "replace battery" warning also at 24k miles and replaced it with a battery from Walmart. I have been occasionally putting the key fob in the slot maybe a couple times a month. I bet it doesn't charge. I am taking my car for its 25k service this Wed. and will ask the service guy. I will report back later this week to let you know what he says.

I also was told when I bought the car to use the dash every once in a while (long trips are good times) to recharge the battery in the FOB since I have keyless. I don't see why they'd say that if this was not a function. But just like any battery - especially removable batteries - they have a shelf live, chargeable or not.

Seeing the type of battery as "CR2032 non-rechargeable", I don't think we can re-charge about fob. At least not with the factory battery.

i call BS on the recharge ability, even when the fob was in the dash, the warning went off like crazy. it goes off everytime you come to a stop then exceed 10mph in or out of the fob

You are right! Just got back from service. The Fob recharging is a MYTH! Service guy said several people have asked him and he looked into it and it does NOT charge in the dash slot! My dealer didn't know what he was talking about when he told me to put it in there occasionally to charge!!!

The key won't forget its settings when you pull the battery out. I've pulled mine out quite a few times.

EDIT: Make sure you put the battery in with the correct side up. I'm an idiot.

Replaced the battery with a brand new one this morning, but the car doesn't recognize the fob. No light flashes on the fob when I press the buttons. Do I need to reset something?

Fob was working fine with the dying battery, just had to get real close to the car to lock/open. Now I just have to use the metal key to open doors. Thoughts?

Did you ever get any resolution to this problem? Would hate to have to go through some sort of reprogramming procedure just because the battery died.

This is my first post, and I hope not to speak out of turn.

On Page# 41 (with reference to the Keys) of my Owner's Manual, Its says..."If the check light does not come on, the battery is dead and has to be replaced. In addition, when the battery is dead the <insert cool yellow dash lock symbol> appears in the instrument cluster display as well as the message...Please Change key battery...battery replacment > page 41...

It does not mention nor does it mention anywhere through out the book that the FOB can be recharged by inserting it into the dash. If it could be I am sure Audi would have made a point of well stating this great feature.

Audi does however say at the bottom of Page# 41 it does say...We recommend having the battery changed by an authorized Audi dealer. However, if you wish to replace the dead battery yourself, proceed as follows.......Ya thanks for the offer Audi, I will take door# 2 and give it a whirl myself and see how it goes.

It cannot be "recharged". The battery is not rechargeable.

while on the topic...does leaving the advanced key in the car while the car is off drain the battery (maybe it is searching for connection until you push start)? My wife always forgets it in the car when she parks in the garage and this was when i started noticing the batter replacement message popping up (happened to be 1.5 years into life of the car).

Also, was there a conclusive agreement that inserting key fob does/doesn't charge the key? Sounds like it doesn't?

Has anyone had to reprogram or resync their keyfob to the car after this? I can't get any of my Advanced Key Functions to work now. Only Unlock, Panic, and Trunk Buttons, but the car does not recognize the Advanced Key. Any ideas out there?

No, I recently just replaced the battery and everything still works fine. Might want to swing by a dealership for them to take a quick look.

That's cool that's the first time I took the battery out of a Audi key fob. Helpful info now I can just hit up RadioShack or Wallyworld for a new one. Sweet!
