    this is why i ask myself why i bought a b5 s4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
taking my car into 034 for the first real mod; a stage 1 custom tune.
take my car in wednesday, they start the inspection and i call thursday (today) and they say i have a bad EGT sensor on the passengers side, estimating me 400 bucks. i say hell no and i went searching for a cheaper way to fix the sensor. found a new sensor for 150, coming saturday. they install it for 120 (over priced OR WHAT?!).

all this for a silly STAGE 1 chip....

someone reassure me buying this b5;)

and the funny part is, this is such a small thing, i cant imagine what some people have to go through when their turbos blow or worse. cant wait for that day

I'd like to keep my car.

Haha welcome to the world of B5 S4s. That EGT sensor does come with a bottle of lube by the way.

You shouldn't have bought it. Now you're just a sucker like the rest of us

Changing egt's is a simple as changing any other sensor on the engine. You need to start exercising some judgement and invest in some tools, or this ownership is going to be a needlessly expensive one. Also learn to buy used, especially for something as fundamental as a stage 1 chip.

    Enjoy!

If you don't know how to wrench, you really shouldn't own one of these (not directing that at the op) Unless you have the cash to pay someone to fix it. Just by changing sensors, gaskets, belts, hoses, etc, yourself. You'll save noticeable amounts of money.

Haha, yeah my sig DEFINITELY doesn't describe my bank account lol. And yes, these can definitely turn into "project cars" wether you want it to or not, sadly.

Before i bought mine i did research for awhile. I wanted to know exactly what i was getting into. The Diy's on here and other sites have helped me out a lot, along with reading about problems other people have had, and how they diagnosed them. My best advice would be to get a decent set of tools, Vag-Com, and a Bentley Manual .

i appreciate the advice as i am only into the first month of owning my b5. and i am JUST getting to learn all the baggage that comes with it haha. loving it so far though

i will definitely invest in tools, vag, and the manual.. everyone and their mother has told me that if i dont do at least half the maintenance myself, im gonna be broke so quick

I just reread the first post. The passenger side EGT is 15 minutes to replace. The driver's side is when you either get creative or get frustrated and take it to a shop

It's already been said here a million times but you need to do your own work. My S4 has cost me under $200 to own since January including oil changes and I bought it without any real maintenance records. I beat on it every time I drive it and it has 150k miles. I almost bought an avant as my second car since it's been so reliable.

haha its so funny especially now, the b5 s4 is a brutal catch 22. they can be had for cheap so everyone and their parents are buying them one, but its such an expensive hassle to maintain(most dont find out untill 3 days after they buy it). that youd have to be an idiot to own one or it must be your dream car.

enjoy. buy some tools, an extra car, and keep your credit good for when you have an actual problem on your hands, and it will happen, at the worst time too.

    It's simple.

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...%28For-6spd%29

Remove the hose from the MAF to the Y-pipe using flat band pliers (http://www.ecrater.com/p/3975836/rad...and-hose-clamp) or channel locks paired with some patience.

Unplug all three connectors at the firewall above the passenger side turbocharger. If you look at the 5th picture in the DIY link I posted, you'll see the EGT right in front of you. The braided harness leads right underneath the top of the y-pipe. It's 2x 10mm nuts holding the sensor on.

Absolutely no need to pay anyone to replace either of these sensors. No need for them at any tune level above stock, either. Personally, I opted to code my EGT sensors out along with the downstream O2 sensors. However, I have DPs and no cats in my exhaust. If you're retaining the stock exhaust for a while, I would talk to them about just coding the EGT sensors out. They are only there to protect the engine in the case of an extremely lean mix. Aside from that, there is the money factor...I'd be willing to bet it'd be cheaper to have them coded out in a revision than to have just one replaced. Not to mention, the other one WILL shit out eventually.

    ... the truth sometimes hurts.
    Because S4 = Hooker
Both can be purchased for cheap, and after one night of reckless, risky fun, either can be found lifeless on the side of the road. Your family is disappointed and concerned once they find out you've picked one up. Not to mention you try to hide how much money you routinely give one from your significant other.

These cars are very unreliable. Now that the car are 10 years old somethign seems to break every month and the parts are way over priced...More expensive than MB, BMW, and Porsche with my whole sale discounts.

I don't really agree with this. I do agree that the cost of having work done at a dealership on the B5 S4 is astoundingly expensive, but IMO, these cars can be kept relatively reliable as a DD if it's isn't having the sh*t kicked out of it regularly.

Define "bad" foxhound ? I know how i drove my first car, so i can only imagine what some of the retards on here are doing to these vehicles.

I daily mine, 184k, 2nd pair of k03's, 25.5 mpgs, and it's usually the fastest car on the road. (being faster than most everything else with k03's is more a statement to the depressing shit area i live in) My S4 has been more reliable than my sisters 4.0 cherokee which has less miles

This is a car you "learn" how to wrench on, it was an excuse to actually learn. Fortunately (shh she might hear) it has been a rock albeit low miles 109k. I love the car needs moar power but still a nice and fun dd, that is reliable thus far. Get EGT and rear 02' coded out, I'm surprised 034 didn't suggest that, as another member mentioned.
