This is exactly what happened and what I wound up doing. I ripped off the button, which freed up the top surround. I could then see down the top of the knob and dislodge the pin and pull the knob off. It was still really stuck in there and I had to use a slide hammer to get it off.

Glad it worked out without damage to the car, it must've been nerve wracking having to deal with that. It might have been a faulty shift knob, will they replace it or will you have to order a new one?

This saved me big time. 2016 s6. Stock shifter. Removed it to change boot. Pressed the Everton while taking it off. Super easy, took 30 secs. Didn’t push all the way up. About a half inch from top and twisted it.

Having some issues installing the knob. Heating and twisting went great. But the button gets stuck in. I have sanded the white plastic down a lot, but still installing the knob after the hard press to engage the lever, button goes in hard and stays in. Also, while messing around one of the few springs popped out. What exactly is the purpose of the springs? They rather pull the trigger in than help push is back out to release the shifter.

It looks like the spring only mission is to not make button rattle when installed and has no other task. No with only one spring it should work just fine.
Anyway. Sanded the plastic down a lot. Tomorrow will try the knob again and it still wont make the button pressable, then F it and it will stay as is. Any more sanding and I will sand right through it.

After hours and hours I finally figured out the problem. The white plastic rod was not 100% straight. Before I looked at it from the top and it seemed to be straight from every angle, but looking it from the side it was obvious that it was bent forward. So brought out the heat gun again and after 5 minutes the rod was straight as an arrow. And guess what. Popping on the knob, it worked perfectly. So, if you have problems. Make damn sure it is straight in all axes.
