    2.5l Inline-5 vs 24v VR6 Swap

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone contemplated swapping a 2.5 I5 *THE NEW ONE* engine from the jetta/rabbit vs a 24v vr6? I'm not personally looking to do it (unless my 2.0t engine were to go) but after reading a lot about engine swaps on here, the cost of acquiring one is more than half the cost of a 24v vr6. Plus, i'm guessing there could be a chance that the flywheel pattern would bolt up the same as a 2.0t vs 2.5 as it does with the MKV platform.

Check out this sweet build thread, hoping to do 850whp

The I5 from what I've heard, is one of the best engines Audi has ever made. Amazing power. Had a friend with an old S4 with a big turbo kit, no internals done, running over 500 hp to the wheels.

If price were even close to equal, it would my choice.

People around here don't seem to be much into engine swaps on our 4's it seems.. they are always shutting down the ideas saying "should have just bought this or that". I like the idea, its what modding cars is all about.. any clue if the tranny bell housing bolts match up?

Ah yes I forgot about reading that vr6 thread.. swap is the easy part, if only the tuning were as easy as turning some screws on a carb haha... it does get the cogs turning though.. *ponders*

This is not the same I5 as you are describing, although the new I5 seems to have major potential too.

If you are around long enough to see the cycle it goes like this.

    1. Exhaust/intake/small other mods. People go crazy
    2. Small turbo upgrade (oooooohhh ahhhhh)
    3. Big turbo upgrade (Oh man maybe one day I can afford that)
    4. BAT (xxxx's car is absurd have you seen it?)
    5. VAG Engine swap (everyone says "I think I'm just gonna throw a VR in there..."
    6. All kinds of crazy mods like Mustang motors and such (b5 guys are here now)

You guys are in between 3 and 5 right now.

OP, the question is, do you have $20k sitting around to do a swap like this? I'm not eggagerating on price

Yeah the VR6 was a lot of work. A LOT OF WORK. And the above figure of $20,000+ is very accurate. Ah the things I do for my car craze. I have my eye on a 5 cylinder TT-RS motor next but I dont really know if I have the energy to go through it all again plus its really not that worth it. Honestly I love my VR6, I have it where it's super dependable, the tuning with the standalone took maybe 5 hours total (need to do our big boost E85 tune some time soon) so I really don't see why people seem to have an issue with custom tuners. Granted I have a very talented tuner, and one who is very anal about the map being perfect so that always helps the cause. I was just going to swap my A4 for a C63 but I love my Audi's so I decided to make mine faster than a C63 instead. Works for me

The tuning thing is an issue because everyone whines about not wanting standalone "because it's an Audi" lol. Gotta pay to play.

And as an add-on to the OP, it really doesnt matter if the flywheel clutch package works and is the same as a MKV...you are going transverse to longitudinal. Let me tell you it took some really good math from 034 to creat that flywheel and the spacing plate necessary to make this work. I used a slightly different tranny than they did on their B5 (newer) so it took extra long hours of multiple curse words for me to get the splines right depth wise.

I figured that since the I5 2.5 N/A engine can be swapped to a 02M 6-speed (GTI trans) w/o any problems with the flywheel or bolt pattern, then maybe a 2.5 would fit using the same bolt pattern. But it's the wiring that I think is the hardest

i really hope you are asking about a retrofit into a transeverse car like a GtI. You cannot put a transverse transmission into a longitudinal car like the A4....that makes no sense at all. This is why doing a VR6 in an audi is difficult. Wiring is the easy part honestly. Doing it right and deleting the factory harness and keeping what is need for certain features not so much. I got crosseyed doing that till 3am

We put a 2.5T in a mk1 TT quattro and it is not an easy DIY swap
