    Let's talk about bikes

I am a NOOB when it comes to bikes but at the end of the week I am picking up a 2008 Ninja 250 as my started bike to learn how to ride and also get into 2 wheel world. How many of you own, ride, had or planning on riding? I joined kawiforums recently to learn as much as I can about 250 model so once I pick up the bike I can give it proper service and clean up. Looks like working on bikes is pretty much a breeze if you know what you doing. Couple of stands and fairings off to reach pretty much into whole skeleton of the bike. As far as oil changes go, what is the proper oil change intervals for 250 models?

i really dont know about the 250 but i use to build bikes that ran in prostreet and super street, as far as my daily driver i change the oil every 3k or 3 months remember that the oil on a bike gets dirtier than on a car because it is used to lubricate the clutches as well.

Yeah that was my exact thought. I didnt think people change oil on bikes every 3k miles. I know there is a 600mile service 1000 mile service and then you have to change oil every 1.5k. Was I informed wrong?

really depends on how you ride it. on my track bike we changed the oil every race day. if you ride your bike hard and i mean hard than yeah change it every 1.5k but if you just drive back and forth for commute u can do it every 2.5k-3k no prob

thats good to know. I am planning on having this bike as a learner bike and commuter to work and back. Also some of my friends have bikes so we will be cruising together, so I am planning on riding it a lot this summer. As for the type of oil do bikes take same oil as cars?

i tell this to everyone if all your going to do is commute and every once in a while hit the curves a 600 is more than enough bike for 93% of the riders out there.

I wanted to start out in a 250 to learn the whole gear shifting and not get pissed when i land the bike. 2008 250 for $1500 is a great deal specially when bike is ready to ride condition. I am hoping to get a hang of it pretty quick and move up to 600 by the next summer.

gear shifting takes like half a day to figure out in all serious. i got my license last month (no bike yet but once I get out of school it's on) and if you can drive a stick you can figure out how to shift very easily.

I'd personally (and this is from talking to a ton of people and also riding a 250 for a weekend and a 600 for a day...skip the 250 if possible. It's good on insurance but you can get bored quickly unless it's like a dirt bike or something.

I am paying $30 a month or around $320 - 340 a year for insurance and was quoted over 2400 a year for a 600.... I don't regret getting a 250 AT ALL basically this summer I'll spend $180 a month for bike, insurance AND gas.

heres a quick mentor note about people on bike... There are those who have fallen and those who will... take your time and learn it the shifting is easy on a straight how about on a long sweeper going uphill on a wet rode... knowing when to shift and how the bikes going to react come from experience, but hey some people are freaks my wife for example beat me her third time on a drag race and i am not bad b any means, but then again she has beaten mostly all the big name in the motorcycle drag racing world.

i would use it for a once in a while commute to work (120 miles round trip and 100 is highway) and other than that purely for fun. i don't think a 250 would cover my needs after about a month

That's a pretty long trip on a sport bike. Might want to go ride someone else's like 20 miles first and see what you think.

Well it does rely a lot on what bike and the rider though right? In my case I'm really short so sitting on mine correctly is a little difficult. I wouldn't want to go on too long a trip.

haha its a PITA to ride 60 miles in the car yet alone a bike. Most distance i covered on 2 wheels was 27 miles on a scooter in Clearwater FL lol

short as in you can reach the floor or short as in foot controls you can always lower the bike a lil to make it more comfortable

from everything i've heard from te experienced riders i know, as in not my 20 yr old buddies, that you can do 4-6 hours on almost any bike. but, you might regret it later that night. it's only about a 45-65 min trip each way by car.

My grandfather has a 70's Sears bike that I'm planning on learning on this summer. After that, I plan on fixing up his '74 BMW R90/6 and riding that daily during the summer. The BMW is a little big for me to learn on being 900CC.

My buddy bought a 2006 katana about a month ago and I tried that bike out and I hated it. Its HUGE and heavy as F***.
250 is about 335lb and pretty low to the ground from what I remember. So it should be great bike to start out on. Everyone always tells me i should go with 600 but for me 250 is plenty for now

I can't see any good decisions coming from myself on a 600cc or more sportbike. I'll be sticking to a cruiser.
