Every little bit helps, but if there is some 80 year old lady who is color blind and kyphotic and can't turn her neck, it doesn't matter what color your bike is or how loud it is, she doesn't see you.

I've been riding since I was 16 (11 years now) and the best defense on the road is keeping yourself in control of your ride. Limit the risk as much as you can.

Did you take your state's MSF course?

No i have not done anything yet.
Bike is unregistered right now. Should be on the road in 2 weeks. MSF course is highly recommended but i think my friend who took it can teach me all that they taught him when he took it few months ago.

come to Ohio Sean, I took the basic bike safety course with bike, helmet provided and at the end all I need to do is go get a new license (need to do that by friday actually) and it cost me $25 for the course, and @22 for a new license. I don't know if it was some deal through OSU since I took it with the college's motorcycle club but it was cheap and now I'm a licensed rider.

this was the actual Illonois department of w/e, so i'm sure there are cheaper options. this one allows you to skip the testing, and do the written test and pay for a new license and that's it, do other classes(privatized?) offer that?

It was just one weekend of safety and practice riding in a parking lot and one evening in the class room. then your skills portion of the test is waived and you have the parts needed to go get a real license.

I guess you couldn't get an Ohio one and then transfer it over afterwards.

The reason why I ask is that while you are riding right now, you are more than likely building bad habits. The quicker you you graduate from an accredited state sponsored MSF course the better. My course was friday night lecture, all day on the bike saturday, and all day sunday, followed by the exam on sunday. In NH if you pass the state MSF course, the waive your test at the DMV and you qualify for discounted insurance. Those are all nice perks, but the most important is that they will teach you wicked important skills. The course I took was no joke. Don't expect to pass if you can't handle a bike because there were people who failed the course and people who just dropped out.

There is no way you guys are taking courses that cheap. Mine was over $300 and i couldn't even pick the weekend or location I wanted to take because there was such demand. And I signed up the day registration opened.

Before you take a course make sure it's state approved.

yeah i know what you mean man but i am not riding yet. I had the bike for 2 weeks not and its such a tease! I take it around parking lot after work to learn shifting and clutching. Other then that i am waiting for title to come in so i can register it.

    I can dig it.

Just saying, I've gone for rides with guys who haven't taken the MSF course and consider themselves "self taught" or perhaps a little too cool for school. and to see the fundamental mistakes they make... it's scary.

Just like anything, motorcycles have risk involved obviously. The key is to limit that risk and put the odds in your favor as much as possible.

Wow. I thought you were much younger.

And to me, I feel the safest when my mind is a clean slate. No distractions visually or mentally. I just concentrate on my surrounding and always, always, always look at drivers around you. I see them as trolls out to kill me. So I'm very defensive.

I dont like the plain look of the bike not I want to stencil design in. Stickers go on and come off easy.

In NJ it's mostly $250, same thing, Friday 6pm-10pm classroom, Sat 8am-5pm all riding/learning in a big lot, Sun 8am-3pm ride/learn/test. Assuming you pass the test, you bring the paperwork to DMV and they give you an "M" endorsement on your D.L. and you get a discount with your bike insurance.

I took this class about 16 years ago and from the looks of it and talking to new riders, nothing has changed as far as the course. I also agree, it was one of the better investments of my time and $.

They also offer 2nd and 3rd lever type advanced courses, so after putting some miles and seat time, if people have time and $, it's not a bad thing to continue to learn how to handle extreme situations for an experienced rider.

My bike... 2005 Ninja ZX12R... I do an annual trip from NJ to Maine 2 days there, and 1 day back... Total trip is about 1500 miles because on our way up, we only use US highways, and on the way back interstates.

Ok keeping in line with my Suzuki heritage, I'm thinking about picking up a '95 Suzuki Katana 600 to fix up a bit. They can be had in the $300-500 range and I'd say at about $1000 I'd have a nice solid running bike... Thoughts?

Katana is a good starter bike. Nothing wrong with them... Dont let anyone tell you differently. Sport bikes are just very dangerous, so the slower the bike, the better until you can handle it. My 1200 cc Ninja, is no joke, if you pop the clutch it will jump off the ground and flip over in the air. My bike does 80 mph in 1st gear (total of 6).

Sounds like a good plan, just remember that plastics add up quickly. Most of the time all the plastics on a sport bike will run AT LEAST $2,000 to replace all of them. My bike it is more around $3,000 with factory pieces.

    Dear Clint,
Let me know when you want to go for a cruise with a few other bikes.
