    Rear right door glass replacement

    Hi there,

A4 B8.5 Avant Quattro Black edition

my new(ish) acquisition looks lovely but it does have a bad scratch on the rear right window. I managed to get another black edition tinted glass for it and was looking to swap out the door glass but I seem to have hit a snag, there only seems to be one grommet/hole to access the plastic pins securing the glass to the regulator guide. When looking at the left rear door there are 2 grommets one next to the motor the other about 4" to the right. On the right hand door the one that should be next to the motor is not there, but the 0ne 4" to the right is there, so I can't get to the inner plastic securing pin. I've sat there looking at the whole door for about 30mins to see if there's another access hole or slot but there just isn't so I can't get the window out

Can anyone explain how I am supposed to get to the other mount/pin, as I cannot see any other grommet or access? Surely I don't need to take out the whole regulator or cut a new access hole in the door panel where one should really be?

    Thanks in advance

    Rob

Maybe those are front door instructions you are following? The rear door glass removing instructions do not involve holes in the door. They involve pushing a T40231 tool down to spread the catches and allow lifting the glass up and out.

For some reason it seems to differentiate the instructions slightly for standard vs tinted glass, something about the mounting pins. Oh, actually looks like two different special tools. T40231 for normal glass, T40254 for tinted glass.

I suggest getting a copy of the workshop manuals from erwin.audi.com. Or at least load up the copy you can find at cardiagn.com. This stuff is in the Body Exterior manual in group 64 (glass).

Looks like removing the window regulator motor is part of the process maybe. I think whoever was writing these instructions were doing them at 5pm on Friday and didn't actually try them out. Maybe it would be more obvious hands on, but I really don't get how T40254 is suppose to be inserted if the window and window regulator are still in the door. The T40231 makes a lot more sense to me, https://audi.snapon.com/SpecialTools...temId=36260117 , but I assume it would scratch the tint.

Many thanks for that smac770, I think it was just an assumption on my part. Given the front glass is removed by pushing the 2 round clips out the glass through the 2 cut holes in the door, then it would be the same process for the rear, especially given the left door has the same 2 holes but the right doesn't.

All seems a bit mad, why not just punch the other hole in the right rear door like the others.

No bother ..... thanks again for the advice, greatly appreciated

    Cheers

Strange one - just had a look at the manual at cardiagn, thanks again for the advice, that's a great resource!!

Not taking away from the fact that there may be a tool to release the catches for the glass I find it difficult to understand why I'd have to buy a tool just for one door when the other three have 2 hole to access the glass retaining lugs/clips. I may just have an anomaly whereby the door should have 2 access holes but mine doesn't.

Not sure what people think, would it be easiest just to core a new hole in my door and get a grommet for it just so I don't have to strip everything out to do something that should be relatively easy?

Did you lower the glass and remove the speaker? Convenience key is immensely helpful when changing glass because you can use the fob to move the windows once the panel is off.

The rear glass, at least on my old B8 A4 and my current B8.5 S4, have both been held in with pressure pin that need to be removed from the center of the window lock by either pushing them out or pulling them out. The best way I have found to do that without buying a specific tool was with a long screw that I threaded into the center of the pin and then pulled out but its been a couple of years since I changed the rear glass.

    Thanks for that,

Yup tried that but unfortunately the speaker is too far over to get at the left hand pin.

To get the pins/clips out I use a T15 torx, where the splines fit into the hole of the pin to hold it steady and the bit diameter is the same size as the pin's diameter so knocks out easily, once that's out, the larger round clip pushes out quite easily with the actual bit holder.

Seems I'm going to have to core a hole, where one should already be as I don't want to have to dismantle the whole regulator etc just to get the glass out.

I’m certain you don’t have to drill any holes to get the glass out. Maybe you can share a bigger image of the whole panel? You may need to pull a cover plug

    OK ...

If I am to be following the instructions that are attached above, there should be 2 holes to allow access to both clamping pins (the 2 back arrows in diagram A64-10224). As you can see from my original pic in the first post (click on pic to enlarge), the one that should be closest to the motor is not there. There are definitely no other holes in the straight vertical line that the left hand pin travels upon, that being said there shouldn't be if the instructions above are to be followed.

As the instructions above also states, the regulator should stay in the door and should not be removed to remove the glass so it shouldn't require me to remove the motor then regulator to remove the whole assembly just to remove the glass. Therefore there [B]should[B] be 2 holes side by side to access both pins, there is only have one hole in my door.

All I can see to do then is to core the missing hole. It should then allow me to follow the above instructions and replace the glass in 5 minutes.
