i have a 2002 audi a4 3.0 quattro, recently my engine went on my car so i bought a used engine with 25k miles on it. i had my mechanic install the engine. the first day out of the shop the a bolt inside the engine snapped causing the valves to bend so i sent it back to him...he re did the heads and the valves on the engine. the second time i get the car back i drive it around for a day and i was having major oil problems..first the car was running dry with oil in the pan...so now hes telling me its the oil pump. wtf is going on is this mechanic fckin me up right now?

If your current mechanic can't fix it, and you know that the old engine was good, take it to an audi specialist, and make this guy pay for it. If, however there is any chance that the engine you swapped in may in fact have a bad oil pump, you are sol.

Did the guy pay for your car the first time you drove it out of the shop or did you have to pay for the new valves yourself?

Ouch that's a hefty price. I would say take your car to another shop that knows audi have a another mechanic look at your car and/or get an opinion to see if his shop would have noticed or fixed that pump before they would have ever even let you drive it. Or even just ask another mechanic what they think about that situation

Maybe there's more to this? You actually drove it away from the shop with a bad oil pump? Were there no warning/ indicators on the dash screaming?
How did you know to take it back...knocking or high engine temp...or?

There is always a risk when installing a used engine. A risk that it is not perfect. For this there is usually a warranty supplied to cover the engine. Generally, in a case such as this, the warranty (from the salvage yard) will get you another used engine for free. The problem being that you have to pay for the labor to swap them again. This is the risk you take.

There is usually an option to upgrade the junkyard warranty to an "installation warranty". Where in such a case that the supplied engine is bad, they will provide a replacement used engine *and* pay the re-installation labor.

Note that in all of this, your mechanic only has to warranty his installation. In the first case (loose bolt causing engine damage), he would be expected to repair it for free, as it was an installation error. However, if the engine itself is faulty, that is left to your junkyard warranty. Default is usually 60 or 90 days, not covering installation (unless you've done the aforementioned upgrade).
^Don't listen to this guy, he's not even a mechanic.

For that price, you could buy my spare 3.0 complete. But it does sound like walky_talky20 is right.

I read the OP's post to imply the oil pressure was fine on the first outing, when the cam drive bolt failed.

Walky_talky 20 put it best, that's the risk you take with a used engine. who supplied the engine you or the shop?
