Has anyone replaced the stock Daytime Running Lights?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just wondering if anyone has replaced the stock DRL's with either LED's or different bulbs.. I believe the OEM bulb is an 1156? I don't want anything tacky, either a bright white bulb or maybe a yellow bulb.. I heard replacing these with LED's triggers a bulb-out light due to a different voltage reading by the ECU.

Can anyone comment on this? Thanks!

Here are the ECS DRL LED's (that apparently won't throw any codes):

Look MUCH better in my opinion. Gives the car a more modern look.

I should be able to comment on this in the very near future. I have owned (but never installed) the ECS LED DRL's for a while. I'll install them this weekend and let you know the outcome. i've heard the same regarding the bulb-out warning...time will tell. There is a probably a fix for it I haven't researched it thoroughly enough yet to comment.

Cool, let me know. I would think a resistor would solve the issue.. what ohm resistor, not sure.

Some bulbs have the resistor built in supposedly so they don't throw the code. Ive had the same leds and resistor in my plate lights now in 3 different cars with no prob. Can't remember which ones though. Got them from radio shack. I also had to install resistor for some hids in a merc a while back.

Oh man that would be great.. if you can remember which ones they were, plz post back. I'll hit up Radio Shack tonight and see if they know which bulbs these are. Unfortunately, from my experience, most people that work at Radio Shack are not very knowledgeable about electronics / wiring. Ironic...

Hey guys, for anyone interested in doing this themselves I just found a sick writeup, although this is for LED's without resistors in them.

Well I didnt get the bulbs from radio shack. The resistor I got from there. Leds I got from h20 a few years back. Yea a DIY is easy to find. That's how I did it. Very easy. Might b a little tough working with those short wires in the headlights. If u can find leds with the resistors built in it would b a piece of cake. I once had a set of led tails for my previous audi with resistors built in and worked perfect

Tried that exact mod...didn't work for me; i even took it to my audi dealer and they could not make it work...it worked but with an error code on the dash
I bought the PIAA chrome mirror lights that does not require any resistors...they are not LEDs, but have a light blue hue.
I have all the parts if anyone is interested; about to through them away.

Are you guys talking about the DRL's or the city lights?

I went with PIAA bulbs for my DRL's which are regular incandescent bulbs with a silver/light blue coating. They a little expensive for what they are, but they put out a nice white light without the blue bulb look. I also didn't want to worry about the heat, or resistors.

I went with LEDs for my city lights with built in resistors from autolumination, but it took them 3 tries to get me a working pair that didn't produce error messages.

I was talking about the lights that are always on, these:

What are the city lights? I thought they were the same as the DRL's, just another name for them?

The city lights are the tiny wedge bulbs just above the DRL bulbs which only turn on when your parking lights, or headlights are on, and the DRL bulbs have turned off.

Yeah, I caught on to that last night...I've been referencing the City lights this entire time, not the DRL. I never turn on my DRL's, I have that knob next to the dimmer knob in the off position all the time.

Not sure what to say. 4 cars here in Portland with this exact mod and no issues. Same guy did the install on all of them in his garage. I guess maybe he just knows what he's doing (I would've had no clue really). No bulb warnings, no nothing. Bummer for you. But I'm pretty certain that it will work if installed correctly.

I wonder what Kevin did. If I have trouble with mine when I install them maybe I'll reach out to him to see what he can share as far as tips or changes to the process.

Are they the ziza's or autoluminations? If they are autoluminations I'll take them. PM me. Thanks

Yes, but I went the FlyKts V4 route, so it was a full transformation.

installed the autolumination leds today and NO BULB OUT ERROR!!!! Even when you set the headlights on auto and turn on the car, there's no bulb out error (unlike ziza or hoen's leds). Hopefully they hold up but for $20 shipped, i have no complaints. thanks again!

You will be good to go. 4 cars in Oregon and a couple in NYC all done the same way (that I directly know of) and they are all good to go!

Looking through the autolumination site, has anyone tried these for their DRLs? They would not need the resistor modification.

I believe it is a 7506 bulb needed for the DRL.

Yes, please do. I'm on the fence regarding these. I assume you purchased the 7506 version. How much was it for a pair, shipped?

Hope that helps! No bulb out issues in almost a year!
UPDATE: Since my passenger side oem city (parking light) bulb blew out (literally melted itself to the hole it sits in the headlight housing, FML) I decided to finally swap everything last night. Good news is nothing flickers but i know have 4 million bulb out warnings.

    This is what I did:
I used the led's & resistors highlighted in red/bold above for my DRL bulbs. Worked fine but got the bulb out warnings.
I took the ziza led bulbs out of the housing they came in and swapped them into the oem bulb housing. DID NOT ILLUMINATE.
I then swapped out the ziza led bulbs and swapped in some left over LED bulbs I had from my interior led bulb swap mod. They light up but don't fit properly in the hole in the headlight housing. I may shave the plastic on the bulb down a bit so I can push them in further and ensure they are securely in there.

I have to figure out the bulb out warning bs I'm experiencing, it sucks looking at that shit on the DIS.

Just ordered the Auto illumination city led's mentioned above with the canbus cancellation chip. I bet the resistors are doing their job for the DRL's I installed but the LED's I installed for the City's are the problem...hoping these bulbs fix everything. Will update when i receive and install them.

I'm assuming the 7506 bulbs are for the corner lights? Do they match nicely with our stock HIDs?

Did you install the ECS Ziza lights? I'm wondering if I can pull them out of my car after a good 1-2 years of being in my car now. :/
