Question: Coming from the Acura world it was advised when changing the transmission fluid to do a 3 by 3. Basically the theory is to remove all the old fluid you need to change it three times. Change it, drive the vehicle for a short distance change it again, drive again, change again which removes all the old fluid from the torque converter and the rest of the system. Would this be the same case with the Audi but something we have all over looked? Maybe this is why some people have success with the rpm surging issue and others do not after changing the fluid and filter.

just bought a 3.2 avant 2 days ago. When it came to a slow complete stop in D, downshifting from 3rd to 2nd has a little jerk.

Moreover, from a complete stop and go steady throttle, car will shift from 1st to 2nd then 3rd in like 2 secs, is this normal? So basically car feels like skipping 2nd gear and straight to 3rd gear. Also, lets say you are going 50mph in 6th gear, when u step on it a little more, it more kick down, it will stay in 6th. Is this normal as well?

Car has 170,000km (106,250miles), Last 8 of the VIN is 6A000991

Anyone used motul v1 or total fluidmatic lv before? About to change with filter and pan gasket.

Also, when i stepped on it harder when taking off, definitely some noise.

Only drained 3.5L with the filter removed.

Changed the filter and pan gasket. Initially filled around 2.75L and then started and ran thru all the gears. Then i filled again while looking at the temp. However i didnt have to stop filling because it has no overflow, so i filled about 2.25L then it started dripping out. It was only at 32C, so i put the plug back in. Ran thru all the gears. Opened the plug, has overflow. Once it reAched 40C, undo the plug and definitely fluid overflow. Shut off motor.

Is completely different than the guide, am i doing somethig wrong?

I just did the rear and front diffs and the tip ATF/filter today. Not too difficult. My only hiccup was the center diff. I don't have a short 8mm allen socket and the plug seems to be really torqued on there. There's not a lot of room between the center diff and the trans tunnel side wall for my bit and a ratchet so I'll see what I can find in the Chinesium mines online.

I did this at 126750 miles on the clock. The diff fluids came out real clean looking and the ATF was pretty clean as well. It was tan and not very cloudy so I expect it was LG6. My trans does not have the firmware update. There was a middling amount of gunk on the magnets and the pan didn't have much goo so I wonder if the trans had been serviced sometime before I got the vehicle. Clean diff and AT oils and not a lot of crap in the pan is a good thing at this mileage.

I used Moble 1 LS 75W-90 in the diffs; Redline D6 in the trans. It may be a little early to tell but it looks like the fluid change fixed a shift flare from 1-2 that I experienced when cold. It was getting pretty annoying when trying to merge into traffic. Shifts are crisp now. Some of that may be the new filter. Here's the old one, opened:

It's got a fair amount of stuff in the media so maybe line pressures were down, causing the lazy shifts? The date code on the filter seems to indicate a 2006 manufacture date. The pan gasket was the metal/rubber one. It's the 11-bolt pan.

One thing of note, when reading the original DIY: according to VCDS the upper temp range for measuring the fluid level is 50C, not 40C. I started out at 39C on an engine that had been off for more than 4 hours. I filled, ran through the gears and topped off as the trans went up to 42C, then shut it down for about an hour while I did the diffs. It cooled down to 39C again and I ran through the process again but not much, if any, fluid was needed. I used about 5.5 qts. I whipped up a redneck fluid transfer pump from a $20 Amazon pump and some bits to make the filling process easy:

(No, I did not use Transmax here. That's from one of our Saabs...)

Next up: front suspension refresh and probably the beknighted oil cooler/filter housing, which I see is weeping gently, like my guitar. Sorry, too much Beatles on the radio today.

I replaced ATF in my ZF6 tranny yesterday with Liquimolly toptech 1800 ATF, Febi Bilstein filter and gaskets.

Car seems to be running fine but I am concerned that I could only put in 5*1/4 quarts inside the tranny after following the procedure. the liquid that came out of the tranny accounted for about 5 *3/4 quarts. does this 1/2 liter fluid affect tranny.

i tried multiple times to fill that remaning liquild when the car is cold and when its idling but it seems to overflow even though the tranny temp is way below 40 C.

Just did my '05 S4 this weekend. I would suggest one major edit to the DIY instructions provided. After you initially fill the trans (2.5-3qts), start the engine and then continue filling the trans until it starts to drip out of the fill hole. The DIY instructions provided say to start the engine and start going through the gears and then continue to fill so that is backwards. There may not be enough fluid in the trans to run through the gears so you should really fill it as much as you can and then run it through the gears.
The shop manual actual states this as well -
    1. initially fill it (engine OFF) until it starts to drip
    2. start it and continue to fill it until it drips
    3. put it in each gear for at least 10 seconds and finally put it in neutral and hold RPM's at 2000 for 60 seconds
    4. check the levels with the assistance of VCDS to ensure you are within the temperature range. For me, I ended up putting the plug back in after step 3 to let it cool down and did this step at a later time.
    That's my $.02
