Finally had my fluid changed and the shifts are smoother. At nearly 75K miles, it was shifting fine but had some roughness 2nd to 3rd and 6th to 4th. That roughness is gone and I discovered a great shop -- J's Repair and Performance in Plainfield, IL. It was not inexpensive since I used Audi fluid but have not had any issues over the two days since it has been done.

Thanks to fly300kts for strongly advising the Audi brand fluid. It must be GOOOOOOOLD; it's priced as such.

I had my fluid changed about a month ago with the ecs kit. Before I had jerking mostly on 3rd gear downshift. Now after the fluid change I have jerking on 1-2, 2-3 upshifts. I'm thinking to have the fluid levels checked again, but the mechanic said he got around 5 quarts in it. Anyone had similar experiences? I'm at 100,500k miles.

This was the kit that I used. All OEM parts and fluid. Had the fluid level check again today and seemed ok. But the little fluid that came out did look pretty dirty already. Prob driven only 500 miles. Wondering what to do next.

FWIW I used the Ford branded fluid (which is supposed to be identical), and I've put about 50,000 miles on the car with no issues.

Are you sure that you are checking the oil lever at the correct temperature using VAGCOM?

Yes. All steps were followed in accordance to your DYI. I still have two more quarts of the OEM fluid and I'm wondering if I should try to squeeze more in there. Is there any harm in overfilling or is that even possible? I take it the fluid expands when it gets to a certain temperature?

Can you link to the Ford branded fluid? I know that Blauparts has a Ravenol fluid whose specs are supposedly the same as he OEM fluid. I think Blauparts has it for $31 with a $3 off per liter special righ now.

3 hours. I ordered the kit from Blauparts. $100. Worst part was being under the car. I can only get my car up 20". It was a little clostrophobic for me.

    Bump...

Is the tiptronic trans similar to the manual trans in that the oil sump is shared with the differentials? i.e. draining and re-filling the trans pan also drains and re-fills the front/center differential? I can see separate fill/inspection plugs for each and the service manuals aren't very clear.

From this link, pages 5, 6 & 7, I assume they are separate?
    http://www.zf.com/media/media/docume...9A_Catalog.pdf

Edit: They are definitely separate. Front and center use 75w90 gear oil.

Also, I have the trans out of the car so I would like to pre-fill it cold before putting it back in. I assume using the fill/inspection holes on the side of the trans will result in the same fluid level as using the pan fill port? Thanks!

I have following posted in another thread, but figured it can be useful for anyone doing trans fluid, thus decided to copy to this main DIY thread (with edit). I have spent quite so time researching these.

For 6-speed tip Quattro, to make sure have the same trans, go under car to look at (green metal) label - it should have 6HP19 and model# 1071-040xxx. Label is 6HP19, but it is actually 6HP19A (A for Audi, Z for BMW).

    There are three type fluids:
    - G055005A2 or ZF LifeGuard 6 (tan): these are factory fill for A4 2005 and early 2006 models. These cannot be mixed with new fluids (below) unless you have dealer update ECU software to a new version. If not, you need to stick with LG 6 fluid.
    - G055162A2 or LG 6+ (blue): these are factory fill from late 2006 models.
    - G060162A2 or LG 8 (green): these are replacement for blue LG6+, and blue and green can be mixed. LG 8 is also used for ZF 8-speed auto trans.

Due to switch date in the middle of 2006, that is why you have to look at VIN number, starting from the 8th digit from right. It should start with 5, 6, 7, or 8 (for 2005, 2006 etc).
    - VIN 5A40000 - 6A99999: factory filled with LG 6 (tan);
    - VIN 6B00000 - : factory fill LG 6+ (blue), can use LG 8 (green).

You can buy ZF fluids, which is exactly what Audi sells, but at lower price. Again, this is for 6HP19A trans.

Got the transmission serviced (tip). I supplied the oil (OEM green) that I had delivered from America as for some reason Audi charge $180 per liter down here in Australia. Had kicking issue many describe. Picked the car up this afternoon and the service tech told me they didn't drop the pan and replace the filter! Fucking pissed. Filter wasn't in stock as 'Audi don't suggest replacing it'. Gear changes are a lot smoother though and I've told them to order me in a filter and do it as I've asked. Won't be paying this time though. Can't believe they'd change the ATF without doing filter.

Glad the kicking is gone, but I am sure you realize additional fluid will need to be provided when filter is changed.

Yep. We're going to strain it out through a filter this time and if it looks ok, re use. I still have 2 liters of new fluid so I'll use that first and top off with strained fluid.

He is lazy. Definitely want to change filter and clean those magnets. AUS $180 a liter! That is pricey!

So is there a recommended time frame to have the transmission fluids flushed? Long Story I just bought my car it had an exhaust leak so mechanic put a clamp on now while the car automatically shifts i hear a weird clamping sound but that couldn't be the transmission because this started after the exhaust clamp put on

    Another satisfied DIYer!

I bought my 08 Cabriolet with 96k miles. The erratic revving got a little worse so I serviced the trans. I was a little upset that it still ran the same after, but after putting some miles on the car there is zero revving now.

I serviced mine in the middle of summer, so the hardest part was keeping the fluid temp down. Had to go through the filling procedure a few times.

    Thanks again!

Phil, if you'd like to add this to your head post:

Trans oil - another good source for the ZF oil is http://www.importecautoparts.com - listed at $20.59/qt for the LG8 , with the ZF logo and P/N "G060162A2 ZF" slapped on it (for peace of mind, should you need it) - they offer free ground shipping for orders over $100.

They also have the original trans oil mfg label at $17.02/qt (search for the P/N, you will see both listed).

Price was current as of 11/30/2015 (I just ordered me a 6-case).

Just the post I was looking for! Never heard of them, OEM parts at a reasonable price and free shipping. Called one dealer and they told me TIPs don't get the fluid changed, 2nd dealer $923.23, local shop $795. Now I need to find a place to do it.....If the leveling wasn't so important I could do it myself.

On my 07, I tried some LG8 to mix, and that did not go well. It slipped horribly, and when was drained again, it was very thin and runny. I had all the fluid swapped over to Redline D4 (3 drain and fills), and it's been perfect. I suggest going for that if you are looking to save some money--it's been great!

    - VIN 5A40000 - 6A99999: factory filled with LG 6 (tan);
    - VIN 6B00000 - : factory fill LG 6+ (blue), can use LG 8 (green).

You can buy ZF fluids, which is exactly what Audi sells, but at lower price. Again, this is for 6HP19A trans.
My VIN is 6A152XXX and the fluid part # that they give me (at 3 different dealers, 1 was a VW) G 060 162 A2 crosses over to the ZF8, according to your info I have the LG 6 tan that can't be mixed with the newer ZF8. My trans is a 6HP19A JJE , all the parts sites say that it takes the newer type fluid. Is there a way to check for the update without taking it to a dealer, like with a VAG Com or maybe through my service records? Got the parts and fluid and now I can't do the job until I'm sure......I also did a lot of research on this. Where did you get that info from?

From various forums and docs, but mainly:

    - ZF Trans Lubricant TE-ML 11
    http://www.zf.com/global/media/en_zf...s/TE-ML_11.pdf
which only mentions 6HP19A as MPL dependent, but nothing specific.

    - Audi TSB
    http://www.audi-forums.com/general-a...squeaking.html
    http://uberlame.com/a6_tsb/Transmiss...2037-06-13.pdf
    Page 1: VIN range
Page 3: for JJE trans code, old SW ver 0010, new ver 0060. I believe VAG com can read this out.
This bulletin (2006) refers to updating to G055162A2/LG6+ (blue), which has been replaced by G060162A2/LG8 (green) since.

    - ZF ppt
    http://www.apra-europe.org/dateien/d...chatronics.pdf
Check page 52/56/59/61: Page 52 refers to LG6 for MPL 1071-040-014 and 044, and page 59 LG8 for others. This MPL (main parts list) is the model number on transmission plate from underneath your car.

In my case, I have 08 A4 tip 6HAP19A, HYH trans code, MPL 1071-040-052. So I am very certain it has new fluid and SW ver. The car has 2,000 miles since, and has been great.

First in order a standard disclaimer: this is how I interpret from those docs, you may form your own opinion. That being said, if I were you, I would VAG com read out trans SW ver, and also check MPL number. If still in doubt, I would flush the fluid completely, not just drain and fill, instead of guessing game and playing with chances. Just follow TSB: take the car to dealer to ask them to check and update SW, drain/fill yourself a couple of times to flush out old fluid as much as possible, then do final adaption drive. You may spend a bit more on fluid for peace of mind of knowing you have new SW and fresh fluid - I guess ZF updated the fluid and Audi issued a TSB for a good reason. Or can have dealer do it. But it is your call.

Some of that info has changed, the recommended fluid, LG8 has changed from green to blue and the VIN takes precedence over everything else for determining the right fluid. My VAG is showing a 0030 SW version (I think), I'm going to call them. The first ZF TE-ML 11 link has just been updated on 1-1-16, I didn't compare to see what has changed. My dealer said that he would install the new version SW for the price of 1 hr labor, not sure if I should change the fluid first or later, there are some questions about if and when the adaptation is needed too. What a PIA...

i finally had the chance to replace the fluid last night following Phil's DIY, everything went pretty smooth and i managed to get close to 6qrts. Test drove the car and what a differene.

Today, after driving for around the neighborhood I did notice every once in a while when downshifting from 4th to 3rd gear i can feel some sort of jerk-jump or kick, i used vagcom to check for any codes and this showed up on my scan

    009984 - Transmission Friction Element / Clutch A
    P2700 - 000 - Apply Time Implausible - Intermittent"

After clearing it, it has not come up yet, any ideas...?

Did you use the newer type fluid in a car that needs the SW update along with it?
