anyone use a "universal" oxygen sensor vs a OEM one?

pretty sure my o2 sensors on my 2.7t allroad are getting tired, its got 115k and mileage is pretty bad around 17mpg with 70% of my commute at 60mph, so ive noticed the prices are horrible...around 100bucks a peice so i was thinking of getting a universal one that i can splice into the existing harness, anyone done this before? ive heard of some universal ones lasting a couple months then creating a ton of problems, so is it going to be worth is to pay the extra 60 bucks for the bosch oem ones? anyone find any cheaper prices, any input would be awesome

Ive had the same problem too. I have noticed my gas mileage around 15mpg. Even tho i do alot of city driving. But i even baby it and coast as much as i can and still get low mileage. When i went to auto zone to get the code checked it said about 5 different things but all related to the oxygen sensor, so im assuming i have the same problem!

I'm using the universal one's right now on my 2.7T. So far going on 2+ years without any problems. Very easy to do with the kit they come with, but if your handy with a soldering iron, I suggest going that route.

I think it can be done. because the spec of oxygen sensor is few items, only the output voltage and the lines, try it, then tell us. hehe

I too noticed a drop in mpg, I've done everything to run as economical. I've even increased air in the tires. Is there a part # / name?

I bought delphi (I think) oxygen sensors a year ago, universal type. I think I paid like $20 each. Soldered them, shrink wrapped afterwards and made sure the were covered nicely with thermal blanket.

I bought 02s off of ebay for dirt cheap, some no name brand but i have had them in my car for 6 months and no problem. Thay were a direct connect no cutting or splicing.

I just installed a bosch universal on my allroad last night. It was very easy to splice and the connection is in the top of the bay at the firewall. I dont see any reason it would fail and even if it corroded at the connection, that could always be redone. It saved around $100 and I didnt hesitate! I guess I will have to report back here in a few months or years to do a follow up as only time will tell!

I also use a Bosch 4 wire and just spliced on the OEM connectors, works fine.

Replaced both main O2s with Bosch 4-wire replacements with the splice box, works great

I'm using Universal oxygen sensor for about 2 yrs and it really helps me in reducing harmful emissions as well as extends catalyst life.
