[QUOTE=S!Lver_S4;8447874]Done and done. Overall, I like it.. esp. for 150 bucks. Nice and mellow below 3-4k and livens up nicely after that. Slight drone below 2k rpm when steady on gas but not too bad. Pretty satisfied with the mod for now. Will comment more when I drive it a little more and get a better feel. Some pics below are below (Higgins mufflers shop in santa barbara did the work for me, best in town).

Nice work ! Im really happy with the sound i think im going to change the tips next

My question is who does this work form $150? In consulting with a friend who has a garage and exhaust pipe bending equipment, it would seem to involve more than just a hr or so of time to do this. Can the pipes be weldled in place. If so, how do you reach the upper side of the pipes? Just asking because I want to get his done on my car. I like the concept and not having to spend $1K -$2k on an aftermarket exhaust.

I don't want to hear it. IMHO, it has to be a huge improvement over the stock exhaust. I want to find a muffler shop in my area that will do it at a decent price

i jsut want to compare the sound, im trying to find a video on utube but i can only find x-pipe or milltek, supersprint, awe. nothing with OEM exhaust and center muffler removed with straight pipes..

You actually wouldn't want to use straight pipes. The x-pipe is necessary because it keeps the 2 separate exhaust flows balanced just like the stock resonator.

man this is helpful, and confusing me, ok so im trying to eliminate center Muffler or resonator on my Magnaflow exhaust. it is 2.25 cat back system. Should i replace Resonator with xpipe or straight pipes? i read in here that the magnaflow resonator is already an xpipe but resonated. im thinking of doing straight pipes but after reading this i dont know if i do that or buy an xpipe. my local shop will charge me 100 to eliminate the resonator and put in 2.25 piping. i guess i can also sell some one the resonator xpipe thats on there now and it already has a bracket made for the B8 S4's if anyone is interested. What do yall think its the best way on going.

Has anyone tried using 2 Bottle Style Resonators instead of the X Pipe. I used this on my E46 M3 and it took out the rasp but made the sound amazing. ill post the video when i can find it.

This is what i am talking about. http://www.amazon.com/Vibrant-1790-B...s=vibrant+1790

The one i used on my M3 was call Aero Turbine AR20 but it might be to wide for our Cars. Any thoughts?

Here is my Video with the resonator and Dinan Muffler

Here is another M3 with the same muffler but no resonator

Local Shop (Smyrna, GA for anyone that may be local to me) quoted $180 P&L w/ a 1hr install. May swing by on lunch tomorrow and check it out. May leave with more noise.

Just to confirm Center Resonator and 2.25" X Pipe??
First page says 2.25" sorry just OCD & the Ol lady is out of town i can sneak this one by and be like what new noise?

That worked for about 5 min with the roc-euro intake and then a hill came and it was like WHIIIIIIIIINNNNNNEEEEEEE...

<ol lady with a mean smirk> yea don't tell me you don't hear that...
<me> oh that noise... new intake lol

I believe the 2.25" x-pipe replaces the rear resonator.

Hi Guys, great mod and I really want to get this done. Just to recap (and some questions):

    1. anyone reverted back to stock after trying out this mod? was it easy to re-weld? reason for returning to stock?
    2. anyone went ahead w/ aftermarket full exhaust after this mod? big difference in sound?
    3. DSG guys, any drone at highway speeds, tolerable?
    4. did anyone find out if there's any sound or drone-eliminating differences between the magnaflow tru x vs resonated x?

thank you all in advance for your input.

Anyone have long term impressions of this exhaust? Would the girlfriend/wife find it annoying in the car, or is it subtle enough to get away with it?

I'm looking to get this done soon but don't want it to be too overwhelming (I do a lot of highway driving).

Great, that's what I like to hear! I was pretty set on this mod before I got my car, but then I picked it up, and I think it sounds actually pretty decent. Maybe its the soundaktor in the 2013? Either way, probably gonna go ahead and do it anyways. Worst case I just throw the resonator back in!

I think i'm gonna stop by the muffler shop this wk and get a quote. Are you going w/ the tru x-pipe or a resonated x-pipe?

I'm going to try just the x-pipe with no resonator to keep the costs down. From what I've heard in this thread I'm not sure a resonated xpipe is needed. I'd be interested to hear how that turns out though if you want to be the guinea pig!

i think the xpipe w/ resonator is just slightly more expensive (like $70)? i'm most likely gonna try the resonated ones since significant droning would be a big negative for me

I bet having a resonated xpipe and then cutting off the mufflers but putting just straight tips on would sound really good. Not sure how loud it would be but still would have 3 resonators in the system (1 on each side on the downpipe + 1 xpipe resonator).

I can actually answer that for you: IT SOUNDS TERRIBLE! I experimented with the stock exhaust A LOT, and trust me, chopping off one set of OEM mufflers (either the center or both the rears) is as far as you want to go. The problem? The drone (6th gear @ 65mph) was ear numbing and I ended up hating driving my S4. The setup gave me a headache every time I drove.

I'm surprised a lot of you doing mods to your stock exhaust aren't coming back on this thread complaining about the drone. I have a Non-Res Milltek now

What was your experience with drone with the removal of one resonator + xpipe? Did you have that setup? Sounds like from others in this thread its minimal.

Do you mean chopping off area 1 or 2, and replacing it with an X-pipe? If so, kind of. When I first experimented with the stock exhaust, I chopped off area 1 and replaced it with the MagnaFlow Resonated X-pipe muffler; and chopped off area 3 and put straight pipes. That actually wasn't bad at all, but too tame for my tastes. Actually, it mirrored the Non-Res Milltek setup I have now. LOL! But for some reason (probably obvious since Milltek spent hours into making their system sound good), the Milltek one sounds MUCH better.

Since it was too tame, I ended up cutting out area 2 and putting in Aero Turbine resonators (resonators famous for getting rid of rasp on the E46 M3). Now that setup was god aweful The drone was unbearable, but at least there wasn't rasp...

Honestly, my memory of how many times I experimented with the stock exhaust is a little hazy. Back when I did it, I PMed a member on here each iteration I had and how I felt about it. I accidentally deleted that PM, but maybe he'll see this thread and chime in what I wrote him.

Anyway, I think chopping off area 1 and replacing it with straight pipes or an x-pipe is a waste of time and money. Those resonators are so small that it really doesn't make a difference whether it's there or not. Well, that's speaking from a manual transmission perspective. I've heard that it does make a difference for the S-Tronic guys, so I can't comment on that. Also, I think chopping off area 2 and replacing it with an x-pipe is a waste of money. I've researched around and talked to muffler shops, and everyone says that having an x-pipe that far back is useless. Yes, it could still "potentially" even out the the exhaust pulses when placed that far back, but nowhere near the extent if the x-pipe was placed near the downpipes. However, it'd be way cheaper to chop off area 2 and replace with straight pipes. I'm sure it'll sound similar with an x-pipe being there....just cost much less.

I had started by just straight piping the center resonator which was vicious, i couldnt hear the M3 i was driving at wide open over my S4 30 yards in front. The xpipe toned the sound right down and got rid of the raspy effect almost completely and has an awesome exotic wail above 4000 rpm. I left the tips stock for now but considering the APR ones as I love the filled out look at the rear.
I guess I was wrong about *just* replacing area 2 with straight pipes.

I don't know...when I was researching what to do with my exhaust back in the day, I found that people had opinions all over the place. It came down to what you can tolerate. I can tell you from my experience with modding the stock system that I was a little extreme (LOL! - spent under $2000 just straight out buying hardware + labor over the course of 3 months just to experiment), but always ended up something on either side of the sound spectrum: 1. no drone, no rasp, too tame; 2. varying levels of drone, varying levels of rasp, not tame.

All I can tell you from my experience that I regretted spending the time and money experimenting, and should of just went with a pre-made aftermarket exhaust. Unlike the previous cars that I've had, this car is just too sensitive to changes with mufflers.

However, people in this thread look to have had much success with just replacing area 2 with an x-pipe, so it's up to you and anybody else considering this mod.

FYI: I'm all over the place with exhausts. I guess I'm really picky when it comes down to how it sounds. Like...I'm already getting tired of my Non-Res Milltek, and thinking of getting rid of it for something that sounds deeper. Also, I went through a few on my MK6 GTI, and played around with mufflers and pipes A LOT with my STi.

EDIT: here's my video of when I was got tired from all of the drone and rasp, and decided to muffler up everything to see how it sounded
