Exhaust Mod - Resonator replaced w/ X-Pipe (video)

Has anyone experimented with replacing the center muffler with resonators instead of going straight pipe? I like the sound outside of the car but I'd like to cut back on the bass around 2000-3000 RPMs inside the car. I'd think widening the center pipes would refine the sound a bit and accomplish this.

I believe further up in this thread someone replaced the center with the Magnaflow resonated X-pipe and noted basically zero difference from stock.

Have been hawking this thread for a while and finally decided to make the move and order the Magnaflow #11385 for 14 S4 DSG. I will most likely be cutting out center res and replacing with magnaflow. I wish I was closer to some of the shops that have already done it because here in Michigan I am getting price quotes anywhere from no way they would even touch it to $350. From what everybody has said here I was expecting for it to be around $180-$250. Let me know if anyone here has done this mod in Michigan and can recommend a good shop that will do.

If you are only replacing the center resonator with the resonated x-pipe there will likely be no change in volume of the exhaust.

Very true after reading more. Thanks for the heads up though. I'm now trying to find a shop to place it where my baby resonators are at and then straight pipe back. Now the hard part is finding a shop that will actually do it. Had 2 shops already tell me it is not possible. I showed them pictures of the various ways that people have them on here and they said they would not even attempt it.

You want to replace your front resonators with the 11385 and remove the center resonators.

That's what the plan is......once I'm finally able to find someone to do it. No shops up here can do it. I have 2 shops that can maybe do it, but have quoted way more than what most people are charged here.

I had a couple crazy quotes as well. Then I found a plain jane exhaust shop and they did fine work.

Just throwing some more data points out for you.

Both quotes are for replacing the baby resonators with the Magnaflow 11385, straight piping through the center res and welding on new rear mufflers.

Small Indy Exhaust Shop near my old house: $200
Large Shop near my new house: $250

I'm still waiting to hear back from a small performance shop near my work as they will be my first choice if they are willing to do it.

If not I will be going with the large shop near my new house for the convenience factor.

that sound is well worth the mod! Great job on capturing how it sounds like. I'm surprised at how loud it is outside compared to inside the car

Get there and the shop manager is arguing with me telling me that the baby resonators are cats and state law prohibits them removing them. After is showed him numerous diagrams and looked up the sort number.

Showed them the APR picture from page 1 and they shut up

Another one for the magnaflow x pipe club at first I wasn't impressed at all. After a 30 minute drive it definitely got louder and again for the people who worry about drone there is ZERO drone. Has a nice mid tone when cruising around and does remind me a lot of my MKV R with a magnaflow touring catback. Very happy with it

Anyone in Long Island/Queens area with this mod that would be willing to meet up? I'd like to see what it sounds like in person. I worry about the rasp in the high rpms. It would be really great if I can find someone that's got the x pipe with borla mufflers.

A slightly used full set of the AWE Touring Exhaust with Resonated downpipes and the 90mm black diamond tips for $1600. Brand new is $2200-$2500.

Meineke is doing mine on Saturday, they gave me a good quote and showed me some of their previous work that looked solid.

Wasn't the cheapest option I found but I believe it is the best for the price in my area.

I went to drop my car off early at Meineke to get the exhaust done and they doubled my quote up to $500 and laughed at me stating no one would do it under $400.

Out of principle I told them to fuck off and began the effort of finding another shop.

I ended up getting referred to a small local shop around the corner from my house. I shot the shit with the owner for about an hour and he told me to drop the car off on Saturday and he would get to it if he could.

Ended up just cutting the stock exhaust off

• Magnaflow 11385 as far up as possible
• 2.25" SS piping all the way back from there
• 2x Magnaflow 11365 replaced the stock mufflers
• Dual Staggered TI Tips in the back

Total cost installed came out to ~$550

Didn't get a chance to take any good pictures while it was on the lift


Cold, there is no drone at any point.

Once the exhaust warms up I get a pretty annoying drone around 2200-2800 RPMs.

I'm going to lay down some sound dampening mats in the trunk sometime this week and see if that helps.

I'm will put about 1,000 miles on it and if it still annoys me I might take it in to mitigate some of the drone.

Love the deep tone of it, love how loud it is(Pretty tame under partial throttle, really wakes up once you step on it), downshifts sounds are intoxicating, DSG fart is even louder.

I will try to shoot some shitty cell phone videos when I have a chance.
