Earlier this summer I brought my car to the dealership because I started hearing the same loud ticking noise as described in this thread. Fearing it was a follower issue, I had them check it out. They told me nothing was wrong and the noise was consistent with A4s with the FSi engines. Fast forward to seeing this thread, I'm bringing it to show them and then buying some JBWeld.

Interesting, 100k miles on mine and no signs of this problem, just checked out the hose/connection on a cold start, absolutely zero movement.

I just went ahead and JB welded the hose to the cover after parking the car for the night.

Started this morning and the noise is gone. Just like PDX04a4, I checked at 104K and no movement.
But I like I stated, now at 106K and movement yesterday and tapping. Hopefully the fix will hold.

Anyone who has done the fix for a while now can hopefully chime in. Also the brake issue didn't show up
this morning. I am thinking this has resolved the issue.

I would like to thank fly300kts (Phil) for recognizing the problem and finding a solution.

I apologize for not noting this.

It's good to hear that the fix is holding up. I rechecked my weld and everything is solid.

Would the loose hose and possible vacuum leak have anything to do with a CEL with codes P0011, P000A?

I was just wondering......it almost seems to be like that on purpose. Is it supposed to move in and out, like a relief valve or something? If so, to late, lol. I already put the JB on it. Just wondering why it moves so freely.

Way to resurrect a thread. I'm gonna try this. I notice that when I go from neutral to drive, my RPMs usually fluctuate. Maybe part of the cause. Plus my brakes sometimes have a bit of give, and sometimes not. Explains a bit... I hope.

just got pointed to this thread from a fellow enthusiast as i was having the exact issue. looks like the route cause is a failing oring where the plastic piece goes into the housing. as noted by adamovich above a new o-ring should fix it without JB weld. However what is not clear is how that plastic piece comes out. Is it held in place by the vacuum pump housing or will that whole plastic piece wiggle out so you can replace the o-ring ?

without that info people are going to gob jb weld to fix the rattling , but could possibly still have a vacuum leak due to the failed seal .

    Thoughts ??

Plastic valve is held in place by two tabs, one on either side. The valve has to be pushed down and tabs depressed then it pulls out. I've used "L" shaped needle nose successfully to depress the tabs.

If your valve has up and down play the factory oring is the issue. It's square sided and seems to wear quickly. Replace it with a round oring and it will seal nice and tight.

Sorry to resurrect a super old thread, but my car has exact same issue, with rather large vacuum leak. If I JB-Weld it, will that make it a huge PITA if I have to eventually replace the pump? Seems like it would be pretty difficult to separate the hose from the pump.

Glad I found this thread, I noticed a wicked loud noise / rattle when I did my cam follower replacement earlier this week. Will have to see if my hose is loose too. So many little things on this motor!

Thank you so much. Mine did not appear to have movement, however there was a large area of deposits around the connection and metal. Cleaned the area and hose with carb cleaner and small wire brush followed by a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol. JBWeld (for plastic/metal) 30min set time and now all is well.

Gotta thank Phil for the admittedly quick & dirty fix. Had this issue once the cold weather hit, and doing it his way took all of 2 minutes in the subzero temperatures (no garage).
