Yes - that is the Audi AMI adapter for USB. It'll work just like the SD cards in your dash.

Will this work with a USB external Hard drive? Is there a storage limit like the SD card slot? Unfortunately all of my music does not fit onto the 32GB SD card, which I believe is the max size SD card accepted by MMI

Can you connect the AMI - USB cable to the HTC EVO's USB - micro USB cable to use for playing Pandora through the car's audio while simultaneously charging the phone? If so, this is a no-brainer!!!

I had a 320gb usb drive that i tried to connect to my ami,but it wasnt recognised.I think its cos id reformatted it to ntfs as opposed to fat32.I have a 160gb ipod classic attached at the mo with 60gb of music on it.Its a real pita scrolling through.Ill end up in a ditch soon cos i cant scroll and drive....so a few playlists on a smaller drive will do me thinks.I like my face the way it is!!

    Wow, that's pretty impressive!

Have you considered having multiple 32GB cards to have different styles of music/playlists?

I have considered it, but obviously if someone could confirm that this usb connector could connect to my 500gb external drive, I would both have everything in one place and not have to worry about losing little SD cards. And I could always organize my music into playlists on the drive anyways to avoid the scrolling/loading issue inherent in having 400GB of music arranged by artist. I feel for johnniethepie even with 32GB it can sometimes takes forever to find what you really want.

I'm afraid to say the limitation is not gonna be the disk size. In the UK a few guys have tried big disks and the AMI simply doesn't support more than 4000 tracks. On guy even checked with Audi that he'd be able to use all the 250Gb on the "Audi Centenary Limited Edition HDD" and they said yes.......and then they admitted they were wrong.

A HDD needs to have a max starting/continuous draw of 500mA.

Unless they've updated the system since my MY2010 then I believe the manual still holds true :

"USB mass storage device and memory card: max. 4000 files in total and max. 1000 files per directory"

I put a iPod Classic in (via my AMI) and that's 160Gb so that's fine for my 100Gb of music. I guess with 400Gb of music you may need to wait for a bigger iPod to come out as they don't suffer the 4000 file limitation.

Having said that I just found this from March :

"I use a 320GB Segate 2.5" drive (Old one out of my Dell laptop after an upgrade) I mounted this into a SilverStyle caddy, cost me £20 from scan.co.uk. Using this with the standard Audi AMI to USB cable and pluged into a standard USB to mini USB to caddy. Formated the disc using Windows to FAT32, filled with 18,000 odd tracks (my complete music collection to date) Works fine. It remembers the last track it was playing, even if I remove from car, add more music onto drive and replace. (With ingition off off course) Fits into little tray too.....
Point to note, Yes the disk is powerred as soon as you plug it in, as I see a green activity LED on the caddy flashing, but then goes to sleep after about 5 mins of no activity, so Yes the disc isn't running continually so don't worry.
One thing I changed from the standard iTunes folders, was I changed the way I organise my music on the HDD for easy navigation from the MMI.
I basically made 26 Folders at Root Level, AAA,BBB,CCC - ZZZ then copied each artest into each lettered foldesr, so AbbA into AAA, Boyzone into BBB etc, then from the MMI interface its very easy to find a track by just say 4 clicks, you can get to any album in your collection, for example, 1/ scrol to VVV, 2/ scrol to Vertical Horizon in list, 3/ Scrol to Album Name in list? 4/ Press to Play, so thats only 3 levels down and one click.
On an iPod to get to Artest begining with V would take loads of spinning of the MMI wheel, if like me you have a large music collection.....
    Hope this helps."

I took the risk to order this. I was able to connect a 16GB USB flash drive. Not tested the bigger ones yet. But will post after this week end

No. The Audi AMI cable has a chip in it to allow the Apple interface to work with the MMI interface. The new adapter between iPhone 5 & AMI Cable will be necessary.
