Left rear brake/turn signal error

I seem to get an intermittent warning on my dash saying that the left turn signal and the left brake light are out. Then a second or two later, it seems fine. I suspect there is a bad connection somewhere. I can pop open the light compartment to check, but was looking for suggestions on other things I might check.
