    HID's in non-projector prefacelift housings?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Perhaps a dumb question: What would happen if I put HID bulb/balast kit in my non-projector pre-facelift housings? I was just assuming that projectors are required, but is this accurate? Is it a matter of heat or light pattern or dispersement? Or is it just a matter of relative quality? E.g., if it could work, would it be better than my halogen bulbs, but not as good as with projectors? I searched, but I did not find the answers to these questions.

Not necessarily, i have 55w 6k in my pre-facelift headlights and it does not blind. Nor do i have heat problems
They illuminate better than halogen bulbs, but they illuminate better in projector headlights.
Its just dispersement of the light, projector headlight concentrate the light where it needs to be, where non projector headlights just disperse the light everywhere.

I guess it depends on how the headlights are aimed.

Buy projectors please. Normal halogen headlights with HID retrofit will blind.

They look light shit too, they illuminate the whole headlight housing and most people that run that setup get the most blue/purple temp they can get, not only are you blinding everyone but it looks cheap as well. A nice set of projectors will concentrate the light into a small area and will give the nice blueish purple light at the cut off line while still having pure white light output. OP I would save up for either a used set of face lift lights, or buy new depo's. Or if you can, wait till a set of oem ecodes comes up in the classifieds like I did. I picked up a set of brand new oem ecodes for $230. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with them.

took the words out of my mouth, to the OP you might not care about blinding people but it looks sloppy as shit, I hate when people do that, it looks ghetto.

My primary goals/concerns would be not to blind other drivers, while at the same time improving my lighting. I don't much care about how it looks. My Avant is a family wagon and a low budget operation; my wife gets the new car, and my spending priorities favor my kids. I am looking to get a racing cart for my boy so if I am motivated to save $200 if possible without being a nuisance to other drivers.

There seems to be a difference of opinion about whether they blind. I was driving in front of an older Audi that seemed to have HID's in old pre-projector housings and did not notice any blinding. I have also seen blinding setups on other cars-- I totally understand what you guys are talking about.

Is the issue that they would bathe more of the left side of the road in diffuse light? Or is it an issue of the height of the beam? Can they be a effectively adjusted to not be an issue to oncoming traffic or drivers in front?

What if I just put some HID's in the foglight position?
    Thanks

It would look like crap and you'll blind everyone else on the road from the scatter.

    HID in projectors

    HID in reflectors

fogs are different...and i bet you still have some.

i had HIDs in my fogs years ago, they need to be aimed SUPER LOW, and even then i still think there could be some glare.

Deop projectors are really expensive, and from the looks of them you can get an ebay kit for about 150 cheaper. With the R8 style LEDs as DRLs

I'll be the devil on your shoulder. Slap hids in your stock headlights, aim them down vertically. Get a friend to drive in front of you on opposite lane and on your own lane to make sure no blindness is caused and thats it. Where is the harm if you don't blind anyone? Thats pretty much the only argument in this thread against having hids in reflecting housings.

There is also the fact that this is technically illegal. An officer can ticket you for it. It isn't likely, but possible, especially if you blind him going the other way. And you may not pass your state safety inspection, if you have one. I know if a car rolled into the shop where I work with an HID kit in non-projector housings it's failing for sure. A cop pulls you over for that, and whoever issued that sticker can be in some serious trouble.

Because it's the "cool" thing to do.
I've seen other cars that weren't Honda's that had HIDS in non-projector housings.
They do blind you, even from far away.

The Prius, older TL, & older Escalade have HIDS in non-projector housings, but OEM made it so they wouldn't blind people.
If your headlights weren't designed for HIDS, don't run them. It's a dick move.
Just buy projector housings and throw HIDS in them.
