    Transmission...where to get 6spd manual?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
As the title states im looking for someplace i can get a new (used) 6spd tranny. My first gear is totally fucked (thank you sounthbend) and my throwout bearing is making a racket (thanks again southbend). Its been getting worse and im going to need to replace it soon! I checked car-part.com and the cheapest ive seen is about $1500 for a tranny w about 60k on it...anyone know of other options that may be cheaper?

Ugh, I'm so afraid of my trans going out... 6spd is pricey.

it will bolt right up? is it 5spd or 6spd?

as for a rebuild, i was already quoted $2700. so thats a no go.

edit: just checked car-part.com...looks like a 5spd. i like the price, but i kinda wanna stay 6spd. i actually used 6th quite a bit. are there any advantages to the b5 2.8 trans? DWM is the correct 2.8 trans code right? and again, this would be a dirrect bolt on to a 6spd engine?

You will need to swap the axle flanges on the transmission, as well as the tailshafts on the gearboxes for it to bolt up. Not sure about the shifter linkages though.

FWIW, the final drive of the trans is the same (3.889), and the b5 2.8 has taller ratios so at 80mph in fifth you should be in and around 2500rpm. I bought this transmission from Doug who ran this for a while maybe he can chime in. There are other members here who have this trans too.
I am swapping out my automatic this week to put it in so I will report back how it drives.

The only thing is going from a 6mt to a 5mt might not be your cup of tea since it's looked upon like "downgrading".

well if i can just swap that stuff from my current transmission than ide deffinatly consider it. ide save nearly $1000 from buying a 6spd trans.

that is about the going price. good luck.

talk to scotty at advanced automation about the cost of a rebuild. you're car will be down for a week or so but it'll probably be cheaper than buying a new one.

yea doug a "new" one from the dealer costs about $4500 at wholesale. plus core which i think was $1000. so cheaper than a "new" one yes. but i dont know if it could be done cheaper than a used one though. who knows what they will find once they get it apart.

Why would you want a 6 speed. My understanding was that it wasn't good for the track but that could just be a Vw 6speed/5 speed thing

Cause most of us don't take our cars to the track that much or even at all. The taller gear is nice to have, and one day I will have one.

If I was going to swap to manual it'd be 5 speed because I don't like the gearing in the 6 speed

i dont track it. plus like i said i used 6th gear all the time. i had a 2002 5spd and got in an accident, now have 04 6spd...i personally like the 6spd better. but like i said above, due to price i may end up swapping to a b5 2.8 5spd trans.

A side note that incause you are wanting to ever use a 240mm clutch I hear the 3.0 trans doesn't have the spacing to allow it to fit.

I think that works, but let Clint or some of the main trans guys tell you 100%. It was just the upgraded 240 clutches that didn't work.

Not true. I'm running a 240mm clutch on my 1.8T engine w/3.0 trans right now. You need a transmission spacer plate from a B7 RS4 in order for ANY clutch to work on the 3.0 transmission on a 1.8T.

What I was saying is that it doesn't work out of the box.
