EPL Tune for 4.2... Any good???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i have an 02 S6 Avant and have been holding out for a tune from JHM, but with my job and lack of 2nd car, i just cant be without a car long enough for what JHM needs to set up my ecu. So, now i'm thinking of going with EPL since my local indie shop is a dealer and can get a flash file for the S6 without me having to send the ecu out of town for a few days. Does anyone have any experience with EPL tuning a 4.2? I have seen a lot of stuff on their turbo applications, but nothing for V8's. Just dont want to jump the gun and wish i had just waited for JHM, but would also love to get this done... i've been waiting to do this for quite a while!!! Any opinions greatly appreciated!!

If I were in your position, I'd get a rental for 3 days, send out the ECU, and get the JHM tune. JHM clearly has the most experience with and success with the 4.2's.
You represent the idiocy of today.

Why not just have JHM flash their file to an E-Prom, and have someone local solder it in? That being said, EPL is a phenomenal tuner, and I would have no apprehensions of running their file in my car. I actually tried to get an EPL tune in my car, but couldn't get our local distributor to make time for me.

I have no experience with EPL. I have Unitronic tuning for my S6. I got a 12 WHP gain in before and after back to back dyno's. On an NA motor I don't know if any one company's tuning is going to make more than 1-2 horsepower different than that either way. I'd say go for it if you can't wait or get a loaner / rental.

Thanks for the input so far guys! I think i will try to get to the Dyno here in town before and after just to get some real data. I have read a fair bit about EPL, but next to nothing for NA motors so i wasnt sure what to think. Anyone else have any beta???

EPL has made great gains on an S5 4.2 I know the motor is slightly different. However they wrote me a custom tune my TT-S and that is a great file.

Thanks for the input guys! My local indie EPL dealer said Tony at EPL has an S6 file, but i wasn't sure if he could customize it for a me a bit without actually having my ECU. i.e. Take care of my rear O2 CEL's for emissions and adjust for living at altitude etc. What is the main difference between a simple flash file a tuner can send to the dealer, like EPL does, and a solder in tune which requires me to send my ECU out for a few days such as JHM??

EPL should be able to flash you from their dealer, if your dealer logs your car, I'm pretty sure EPL can write you a more custom program. Call 203-345-6499 ask for Robin, he'll be able to answer all your questions on the tune.

    Hi Jay

Results will be similar to below (93oct, power @ the wheels on our Mustang dyno):

The tune runs $449 and Bryan @ Autosport Werks can handle everything for you. Is the car modified at all?

I am actually in Albuquerque now, so i would be working with Speedlab. The car has S6 DP's with no pre-cats and the main cats have been cut out. Other than that, the only engine "mod" is a K&N drop in. Will do cat back this winter hopefully when Stratmosphere has their sale on Milltek. I also live at altitude and have CEL issues due to not having cats, and need to get through emissions at some point in the next couple of months. Are those things you can address with this tune? Thanks so far!!!

We can do an 'off-road' file that will take care of the CEL, and a file for altitude is no problem. Feel free to call and schedule an appt and we'll get it sorted for you!
