RNS-E Messed up - asking for PIN

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Used this method: http://audiforum.us/rns-e/4750-vim-h...-my-rns-e.html
** obviously the "how i can break my rns-e" is appropriate

I was doing the VIM hack for the RNS-E and I'm having an issue. I managed to get it to successfully downgrade to the hacked 0080 version and then updated it to the 0200_US version.

The issue is that it's asking me for a PIN. It has never done this. I don't know the PIN, Audi corporate doesn't know it and the dealership said there is no way the can get into it (they spent 2 hours).

How do I go about fixing this now? It was a unit that was included with the car so the VIN should match over the CAN. I tried searching but can't seem to find anyone with the same issue (or i suck at searching).

Thanks in advance for any insight...

the pin comes with the rns-e unit. if you don't have one, the dealer can reset it with a new one. that is what i had to do...

the dealer can help you. mine did it at no charge for me...

Also when I bought my RNS-E the pin # was stickered on the top of the unit? Maybe you could also check that if you have any radio keys?

No PIN on top of the unit, no PIN in the owners Manual or any of the documentation. No PIN in the truck in the spare tire wheel well... I looked everywhere and there's nothing. I'm at a loss short of finding the original owner of the car.

The Dealership worked on it for two hours and was not able to reset it. The only screen you can get to is where it asks you for the PIN. Everything else is locked, including the screen (to access the DVD drive)

try a different dealer. its not rocket science to reset this unless your hacked software somehow fucked the unit...

Dealer should have it on file, especially the dealer that first sold the car. They'll need the radio number and vin.

On my unit it looked like a factory sticker... I wouldn't of mentioned it if it was hand written.

Do you have vag-com? If so, can you connect to the RNS-E? If you can I'd be intersted in seeing what the coding for the RNS-E module looks like. Maybe you just need to reinstall your current RNS-E software... Assuming your didn't brick your RNS-E if the RNS-E was original to your car, or if it was purchased from a dealer (never installed in another car) then your dealer should be able to find the code using the AUZ number on the radio and your VIN. If it was originally installed in another vehicle then you would need the VIN of that car to get the code. I bought a radio without a code, and was able to get the code by posting the AUZ and the seller's VIN on Justanswer.com, an audi tech got me the PIN for a few bucks. It might be worth a try.

    THIS.
It's the fastest and easiest way to get it since most dealers seem to refuse helping you out with this these days. Altho I don't think you need the VIN from the car the RNS-E was originally in. I believe I just gave them my VIN when I installed mine, so I'm pretty sure any VIN will work.

I'll try all 1's now... It's a NA unit. I have already tried reinstalling all of the factory software with no luck. I'm in the process of trying to find an AISIN Unlock CD (the US version). What a nightmare this has been.

As for the AUZ - apparently my year was the year they stopped doing the AUZ numbers. I don't have one. it's not printed on the unit, not in the passenger wheel well and not in the documentation. So there is no way corporate can help.

I was in the same sitaution. You need Vag-Com to get your RNS-E serial #. Open up the nav unit in VAG and it will show you the AUZ#, Then take that and your VIN to justanswer.com........1 hour(if that) later you have PIN

Oh really? I didn't know that. I'll have to try it. So the dealership is that dumb that they couldn't go in and figure that out? Seriously? That's sad. I'll give this a try tonight. Thanks Sniper.

Yeah I knew what it was I thought maybe there was some amazing feature that I didn't know about that I got to activate :)

Wishful thinking in this disaster of a project.

Thanks guys. I'm going to be doing a little work on it tonight so hopefully I get everything sorted out.

Good luck. And stick with the VIM project once you get your pin situation squared away, your problems don't have anything to do with the VIM hack, it's simply that it often requires you to enter your pin. I did the hack a few months ago and it worked fine, I had some issues with the nav voice coming from the back speaker for a while but got that fixed as well. Works like a charm.

Hey - I'm half way there. Went to the dealership again and they had NO clue how to change adaptation values. They use the VAS-PC system and don't have K-line switches for them so basically they can only communicate via the CAN. Funny how people on this forum know more about these systems than those "professionals". Anyway, went to a buddy's place to use his VAG-COM and we were able to get the AUZ number from the system. I called it in to corporate and they are going to call me back tomorrow with the PIN (the people who have access to that database were already gone.... this was around 7:30PM). So we did the 0080 downgrade and now the car is sitting with the battery unhooked so as to make the VIM hack permanent. Tomorrow morning I'll throw in the 0200 CD and wait to get the PIN from Audi. Then, hopefully, I'll be driving with my TV port active and an iPod happily playing again.

    ... hopefully.

BASARAB: The plan was actually to go to 0150 to 0200 to 0200/0270 in that order (I have 2009/2010 disk which is 0260). Would this still work?

AudiTechS4: Thank for the offer. Once I get to work I'll PM you!

Got it working!!! Oh it was a long week with no Radio / NAV. I ended up using the VAG-COM to get into the unit to get the serial and Audi Corporate got me the PIN number (AudiTech was just 20 minutes behind, thanks!). I did the 0080 downgrade, left the battery unplugged over night, installed 0150, installed 270/200 to avoid updates from the 2010 Maps (0260) and the VIM hack works and the NAV lady talks to me in the front seat.

Thanks to everyone for your help. What a pain in the ass but a very worthwhile project.

AudiTechS4: The reason they couldn't do it was because they use the VAS-PC and the VAS5054a to diagnose the car. They don't have the K-Line switch in order to get into the NAV unit in my model of the car and therefore they weren't able to get the AUZ number from the Advanced ID in module 37. They weren't able to connect to much of anything, actually. The VAG-COM automatically switches between CAN and K-Line, the VAS unit does not. It just seems like they have a pretty outdated version of the module / software to be called a dealership.

Hey - The VIM is working fine but the NAV is a little screwed up. I was traveling in Falls Church (12 miles west of DC) and the NAV thought I was driving in DC through the river... Is there a calibration process I need to run through? I did the "set position / direction" option but that got messed up very shortly after I did it. Also, I didn't go back and set the Adaptation values after the VIM hack... would one of those being set incorrect be the cause of this?

    Thanks

I am not sure, when I upgraded from 080 to 150, I set all the adaptation values and than upgraded to 200/270. My Nav is working fine. U might have to run the process again..

I could always downgrade to the 0150 again and then back to 0200... once i get my hands on the VAG-COM again I'll see what happens...

BAS; I also didn't write down the "coding" value because I didn't understand what it was. I only wrote down the adaptation values. Do you know what I'll need if I have the CD Changer, the NAV, Sirius radio, multifunction wheel and now the iPod over the TV? I was thinking 0301718 would work...

Well step one to figuring out why your NAV doesn't know where you are: plug it in. I'm an idiot and I unplugged it when I had the unit out and forgot to plug it back in. Everything is working perfect. Again, thanks everyone for your assistance.

LOL, congratulations on getting it sorted out. What route are you going for the video source? I went the Homedock via Kufatec IMA route and it's great. The Homedock is a bit buggy sometimes but it works really well most of the time.

I use the Alpine KCE-425i to power the iPod. It's nice but there are a few issues I have with it (for one: if you twist the large knob on the NAv quickly, it will fast forward the song. If you twist it slowly, it will navigate through the menu. If you want to get to artists starting with 'Z', you're going to be there for a LONG time).
